The Sydney Mailwas anAustralianmagazine published weekly inSydney.[1]It was the weekly edition ofThe Sydney Morning Heraldnewspaper and ran from 1860 to 1938.[2]
History
editThe Sydney Mailwas first published on 17 July 1860 byJohn Fairfax and Sons.[3][4]In 1871 the magazine was renamed for the first time, and it was published asThe Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiserfrom 1871 to 1912.[5]In 1912 it reverted to its original name,The Sydney Mail,and was published under this masthead until 28 December 1938 when the magazine ceased publication.[4][6]It was published on a weekly basis and became known for its illustrations.[4]
Earlier titles
editThe Sydney Mailhad absorbed anotherJohn Fairfaxpublication when it began in 1860, theShipping Gazette and Sydney General Trade List,which was first published in 1844 by Charles Kemp and John Fairfax and at that time absorbed theSydney General Trade List.[7]This was the final title of theList,which began publication as theSydney General Trade Listin 1828.[8]It changed title in 1829 to theSydney General Trade List, and Mercantile Advertiser,[9]in 1830 to theSydney General Trade List, Mercantile Chronicle and Advertiser,[10]and finally in 1834 to theSydney General Trade List.[11]
