Early life
editLennon was born on August 9, 1970[2]inOak Park, Illinois.Of Irish and Scottish descent,[3][4]he is the son of Kathleen (née McSheehy) and Timothy Lennon.[5]He graduated fromOak Park and River Forest High Schoolin 1988.
At 16, he met friend and future co-starKerri Kenneyat theater camp atNorthwestern University.The two later attendedNYU,[6]where they joined a comedy troupe called The New Group.
Career
editActing and performing
editWhile Lennon was a member of The New Group, the comedy troupe changed its name toThe State.As they performed material at theaters and clubs in New York City, they worked on theMTVshowYou Wrote It, You Watch It.This led to the self-titled seriesThe State,which ran from 1993 to 1995 onMTV.It was nominated for a 1995Cable Ace Awardfor Best Comedy Series. In the same year, they created a special forCBScalledThe State's 43rd Annual All-Star Halloween Special.
After the departure ofThe Statefrom MTV and failed long-term deals with bothABCand CBS, Lennon, along with Kenney,Robert Ben Garant,andMichael Ian Black,created and starred in theComedy CentralprogramViva Variety(1997–99). The show was based on a sketch which Lennon had written for the final season ofThe State,called "The Mr. and Former Mrs. Laupin Variety Programme."Viva Varietyreceived a 1997Cable Ace Awardnomination for Best Comedy Series.
AfterViva Variety,Lennon, Kenney, and Garant created and starred inReno 911!(2003–09). The series was initially slated to be onFox,but the channel rejected it for being too risqué and the program ended up onComedy Central.
Lennon has appeared as a guest star in dozens of TV shows includingThe League,Childrens Hospital,Party Down,New Girl,How I Met Your Mother,Comedy Bang Bang,andDon't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.One of his notable guest starring roles was asJoey Tribbiani's blackjack-dealing "identical hand twin" on theFriendsfifth-season finale ( "The One In Vegas", Pts. I and II). Additionally, he has appeared onJimmy Kimmel Live!,The Tonight Show,The Daily Show,Late Night with Jimmy Fallonand with 31, had the second-highest number of appearances onThe Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.In 2008, he began doing stand-up comedy, occasionally playing guitar, and incorporating music. He appeared onThe Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show,The Jeselnik Offensive,andThe Benson Interruption.He was the guest on the first episode ofChris Hardwick'sThe Nerdist Podcast,which was recorded in Lennon's garage. In 2010, Lennon and Garant created and starred in a sitcom pilot forNBCcalledThe Strip.In May of that year, it was announced that NBC had decided not to produce it as a series.
In November and December 2011, Lennon filled in as guest voice for the robot sidekickGeoff Petersonon the CBS showThe Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.Lennon has appeared in many films includingBad Teacher,Memento,How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,Transformers: Age of Extinction,andI Love You, Man,for which he and co-starPaul Ruddwere nominated for a 2009MTV Movie Awardfor Best Kiss. In twoChristopher Nolan's films,Memento(2000) andThe Dark Knight Rises(2012), Lennon played a doctor.[7]
Lennon's voice acting work includesKim Possible,Bob's Burgers,Archer,andPlanet Sheenin which he played the character of Pinter. He played Scribble inSecret of the WingsandTinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast.He was the voice of Eddie the Shipboard Computer in the film version ofThe Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxyand the voice of Fearless Leader in the 2014DreamWorksshort film version ofRocky and Bullwinkle.He is also the voice of Munk onDawn of the Croodsand the voice of Chief O'Hara in theWarner Brothersanimated filmBatman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.
Lennon was a producer of the 2013-17late-nightpanel game show,@midnight,hosted by Hardwick; Lennon appeared 17 times on the show as a panelist/contestant. He won the show seven times.[8]He played Felix Unger in the 2015-17 television seriesrebootofThe Odd CoupleoppositeMatthew Perry,who played Oscar Madison.[9]In 2016, he co-starred as a scientist inParamount Animation'sMonster Trucksand began a recurring role on the Fox action sitcomLethal Weaponas Leo Getz, a character which was previously portrayed on film byJoe Pesci.At the 2016People's Choice Awardsceremony, Lennon participated in an on-stage sketch parodying a recent gaffe bySteve Harveyat theMiss Universe 2015pageant.[10]In 2020 and 2021, he had a recurring role inSupergirl'sfifth and sixth seasonsasMr. Mxyzptlk,taking over fromPeter Gadiot.[11]
In 2020, Lennon reprised his role as Lieutenant Jim Dangle in the seventh season ofReno 911!which aired onQuibi.He appeared in the 2021 filmReno 911! The Hunt for QAnon.The eighth season of the series, now titledReno 911! Defunded,premiered onThe Roku Channelin February 2022. In 2023, he was cast in theZoey 101reboot,Zoey 102.[12]The film was released on July 27, 2023, onParamount+.[13][14]
Screenwriting
editLennon is a successful screenwriter andscript doctor.Most of his screenplays are written in collaboration with writing partner Robert Ben Garant.[6]Their films have earned over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office.[15]Among Garant and Lennon's credits are theNight at the Museumfilms, the 2005 Disney comedyThe Pacifier,and the 2006 prison comedyLet's Go to Prison.
In 2010,FX Networkordered apilot episodefor a Garant/Lennonscience fiction televisioncomedy calledUSS Alabama,set 1000 years in the future aboard aUnited NationsPeacekeepingspaceship, the U.S.S.Alabama.[7]Garant and Lennon wrote a book about writing for film calledWriting Movies for Fun and Profit: How We Made a Billion Dollars at the Box Office and You Can Too!in 2011.[15]They wrote, directed, and starred in the 2013 filmHell BabystarringRob CorddryandLeslie Bibb.The film was produced byDarko Entertainmentand shot on location inNew Orleans.Hell Babypremiered at the2013 Sundance Film Festival.[7]Garant and Lennon are credited as story co-writers for the film version ofBaywatch(2017). Lennon is the author of four ofIFC's "50 Greatest Comedy Sketches of All Time".[16]
Novels and stage
editLennon has written threeyoung adultnovels titledRonan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddles,Ronan Boyle and the Swamp of Certain Death,andRonan Boyle into the Strangeplace.Ronan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddlesdebuted onThe New York Times Best Seller list.[17][18][19][20]He wrote the book for the theatrical production of "Trading Places: The Musical!" which debuted at theAlliance TheatreinAtlantain June 2022.[21]
Personal life
editLennon lives inWisconsinwith his wife, actress Jenny Robertson whom he married in 2002, and their son.[6]He is a fan ofThe SmithsandMorrissey,[22]occasionally performing live as a guitarist with the tribute band Sweet and Tender Hooligans.[23]
