ʿUmar Dīn(Arabic:عمر الدين), (reigned 1526–1553), was aSultanof theAdal Sultanatein theHorn of Africa.He was the younger brother ofAbu Bakr ibn Muhammad.[1]According to historianRichard Pankhurst,Umar was ofHararibackground.[2]

After his brotherAbu Bakr ibn Muhammadwas killed byImam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi(1506–1543) in 1526, Umar Din was made sultan by Imam Ahmad. He ruled as apuppet king,with Imam Ahmad wielding true power.[3]

TheFutuh al-Habasaof Sihab ad-Din records that the Sultan and the Imam quarrelled over the distribution of the alms tax at some point between theBattle of Shimbra Kureand theBattle of Amba Sel,which led to Imam Ahmad leavingHararto live amongst theSomalisinZeilafor some time.[4]

He was succeeded by his sonAli ibn Umar Dinin 1553, who in turn was succeeded by his brotherBarakat ibn Umar Din,the last member of theWalashmaʿ dynasty,in 1555.[5]
