Vonitsa(Greek:Βόνιτσα) is a town in the northwestern part ofAetolia-AcarnaniainGreece,seat of the municipality ofAktio-Vonitsa.The beach town is situated on the south coast of theAmbracian Gulf,and is dominated by aVenetianfortress on a hill. Vonitsa is 13 kilometres (8 miles) southeast ofPreveza,18 kilometres (11 miles) northeast ofLefkada (city)and 90 kilometres (56 miles) northwest ofAgrinio.TheGreek National Road 42(Lefkada-Amfilochia) passes through Vonitsa.

History
editVonitsa is built near the site of ancientAnactorium,an important city ofAcarnania,founded by theCorinthiansin 630 BC. Like the other cities of Acarnania, it went into decline when the Romans foundedNicopolison the other side of the Ambracian Gulf after theBattle of Actium,and forced its inhabitants to move to that city. Modern Vonitsa was founded during the Byzantine era. Vonitsa was controlled by theRepublic of Venicebetween 1684 and 1797. After theGreek War of Independence,the town became a part of the Kingdom ofGreecein 1832.
On 18th October 1862 theinsurrectionthat later spread toAthensand lead to the overthrow ofKing Otto of Greece,started in Vonitsa.
