Weißensee(German pronunciation:[ˌvaɪ̯sn̩ˈzeː]) is a quarter in theboroughofPankow[2][3]inBerlin,Germany, that takes its name from the small lakeWeißer See(literally 'White Lake') within it. BeforeBerlin's 2001 administrative reform,[4]Weißenseewas a borough in its own right, consisting of the quarters ofWeißensee,Heinersdorf,Blankenburg,Karow,andStadtrandsiedlung Malchow.A fictional German-language TV seriesby the same nameis set in the borough between 1980 and 1990 during thecommunist era.[5]

History
editWeißenseewas first mentioned in 1313 asWittense.[6]The first settlers subsisted on fishing and established themselves on the eastern shore of the lake, where an oldtrade routeconnected Berlin withSzczecin(German:Stettin) and theBaltic Sea– today theBundesstraße 2federal highway.[1]

Overview
editWeißensee is one of the most peaceful districts of Berlin.[citation needed]The immediate area around the lakeWeißer Seeis characterized by its historic architecture, numerous places of interest, parks, lakes, and activities.[17]TheWeißensee Academy of Art Berlin(Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee) is of national rank.[citation needed]TheRadrennbahn Weissenseecycling track has also hosted popular music concerts.[18]The largest concert ever held here was aBruce Springsteenconcert on July 19, 1988, attended by an estimated 160,000 people.[19]AtWeißensee Cemetery,one of Europe's largestJewish cemeteries,notable people such as painterLesser Uryand publishersSamuel FischerandRudolf Mosseare buried.[20][21]
The lake is almost circular in shape with a diameter of up to 300 metres (980 ft) and is up to 10.6 metres (35 ft) deep. With an area of 8.3 hectares (890,000 sq ft),Weißer Seehas a water volume of 360,000 cubic metres (13,000,000 cu ft).[6]
