City names in infoboxes

I feel like this must have been discussed before... As many of you know mailing addresses in New York City may go by the borough (123 Main St, Brooklyn, NY) as the boroughs share street addresses. This seems to counteract the established standard of "City, State, Country" in infoboxes. An easy way out is to just put "Borough, New York City, New York, US" but that could be too long aesthetically. So is "Borough, New York, US" acceptable provided there is ambiguity as to what borough the subject resides in?MusikAnimaltalk18:01, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

The USPS's addressing policies are not consistent throughout the city. All mailing addresses in Manhattan are "New York, New York", and in Brooklyn it's "Brooklyn, New York", while in Queens each separate post office is used, as in "Astoria, New York" or "Flushing, New York". (I can't speak with any certainty about the Bronx and Staten Island). Since New York City (and, BTW, that's its official name, "New York City" or "the City of New York" ) is one of a handful of "world cities" which should be recognizable to people all over the globe, I avoid using "New York, New York" and "Brooklyn, New York" with preference for "Manhattan, New York City" and "Brooklyn, New York City", or, if the neighborhood is known and uncontentious "Tribeca, Manhattan, New York City", for instance, or "Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, New York City". (The "location" parameters in an infobox should give the reader theactual physical location, and not simply a generalized mailing address. I agree that tacking on the state and country makes for quite a long string, and, with the "world city" rationale in mind, I usually don't bother with them at all as being unnecessary.BMK(talk)20:31, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
Why not just go with the USPS official names? That seems like the most straightforward solution to me.Epic Genius(talk)01:15, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
It may be a "straightforward solution", but it's one which is not always going to provide the correct answer - unfortunaely, life is messier than that. USPS names are the names ofpost offices, not necessarily the names of the cities they're in. They were designed for the delivery of mail, not necessarily as identifiers of the locale, and have been superseded by ZIP codes. Many places exist that are in one village or town or city and yet have their mail handled by a post office in another place because it's closer to the address. To take an example you're familiar with, mail to addresses in Marble Hill will be delivered correctly whether they're addressed to "Marble Hill, New York" or "Marble Hill, Bronx", as long as the ZIP code is correct.BMK(talk)04:24, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
I just noticed that there are some places, like "Red Hook, New York", where using just "New York" can be ambiguous (it can refer toRed Hook, Brooklyn;Red Hook (village), New York;or the town ofRed Hook, New York), so I understand that that's why the correct ZIP code is needed. In that case, we can do "Manhattan, New York" for Manhattan; "Brooklyn, New York" for Brooklyn; and "Queens, New York" for Queens, in order to keep consistent with other places outside of NYC – likeAlbany, New York,orBuffalo, New York– since apparently only the ZIP code has to be correct. People from out of NYC will be more familiar with the higher-level administrative divisions (boroughs) of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, than they will be with lower-level divisions (neighborhoods) of Astoria or Flushing.Epic Genius(talk)15:53, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
Except that the city name is not "New York" (which in any case is ambiguous) but "New York City". "New York, New York" is a postal address only.BMK(talk)18:08, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
I actually meant "New York" as a state name, not a city name. For example, "Manhattan, New York" as opposed to "Manhattan, Kansas"or"Manhattan, Illinois".Epic Genius(talk)20:23, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
I thnk it's much more important to indicate that the place is in New York City then that it's in New York state. As I said, there are a handful of cities -- Paris and London, for instance -- which have this status. They are exceptions to the usual City, State, Country formulation.BMK(talk)20:29, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
I think that if you include a link toManhattan,or toBrooklyn,Queens, the Bronx,orStaten Islandfor that matter, the reader will realize that these are in NYC. Besides, the names of the 5 boroughs are known around the world, and most English speakers know that Manhattan or Brooklyn is in New York City. If not, then "New York City" can be appended.
However, even though either "Manhattan, New York City" or "Manhattan, New York" can be used, "Manhattan, United States" cannot.Epic Genius(talk)20:33, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

@Beyond My KenandEpicgenius:Thanks for the input, guys! I'm late to get back to you, I'm realizing how bad I am at this watchlist thing. Anyway, this question arose from a dispute atBrooklyn Nets. Here, there's no question the team belongs to the borough of Brooklyn, and at least one author (surely others) have opted with "New York City, New York" as opposed to "Brooklyn, New York" or "Brooklyn, New York City, New York" – and here the US ismplied by the affiliation with the NBA (though NBA also has teams in Canada!). So I guess to bring this discussion a step further: Should using the borough name as the city be limited to cases where it as ambiguous? For instance, at the time of writing,Flushing Meadows–Corona Parkis listed as located in "Queens, NY, United States"; then we haveGrand Army Plazalisted as "Brooklyn, New York City" and a different field listing the state of "New York", andMedgar Evers Collegeas "New York City (Crown Heights, Brooklyn), New York, United States"; Meanwhile we haveCentral Parklisted as "ManhataninNew York City, United States ". I guess the question is, should we bother with any sort of consistency? Or perhaps it varies based on subject and not the scope of New York City, such as parks versus sports teams and colleges?MusikAnimaltalk02:10, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

@MusikAnimal:The infobox in the "Medgar Evers College"article was an experimental addition of the neighborhood and borough, besides just" New York City, New York, United States ". Most infoboxes about NYC subjects are like those in the"Grand Army Plaza"and"Central Park"articles, which indicate" New York City "as an administrative division behind" United States ".Epic Genius(talk)02:16, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Epicgenius: I do not think your generalization about "most infoboxes" is correct, either numerically or stylistically. MusikAnimal: "Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." (Emerson) I'd go withBrooklyn,New York City.As a world city, New York state and United States are both implied.BMK(talk)03:41, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Actually, the format with NYC linked in the infoboxes is the most common. Indeed, my generalization is correct numerically, unless you can pull up evidence that another format prevails.Epic Genius(talk)15:04, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Minor point, three of the mainland Queens GPOs or Section Centers, 111 Long Island City, 113 Flushing, and 114 Jamaica, are former Townships, though Newtown's name has been replaced by LIC. 116 Rockaway is a former panhandle of Town of Hempstead. So, once upon a time, Post Office boundaries followed municipal ones.— Precedingunsignedcomment added byJim.henderson(talkcontribs)
Cool. So that's probably why any zip code numbered 111xx is often labeled as "Long Island City, New York" whether it's in Astoria, Sunnyside, or somewhere else. Never realized that.Epic Genius(talk)23:41, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

A few weeks ago, I proposedsome changesto the article'sHistorysection, but thus far I haven't received any feedback. Since the article is of interest to this WikiProject, as MetLife originated in New York and is headquartered there, I'm hoping editors here might be willing to take a look. Because of myCOI,I will not be making any edits myself and I'm looking for editors to review my work. If you're able to help, I welcome any input. Notes:

  • The "find and FIX" is facilitated by programmer/editordispenser'sDabSolver tool.DabSolver can find the ambiguous term and help you fix it. Just click on "FIX" to run DabSolver, and you only have to pick which target the term should be linked to, from a drop down menu based on the corresponding disambiguation page. This works as long as the intended target is given as an option on the disambiguation page.
  • DabSolver works in all 46 NYC cases to find ambiguous link(s). Sometimes, elsewhere, it turns out that DabSolver can't find an ambiguous term that is a wikilink hidden inside a nav-template or other template call, in which case you can probably only find it by hovering over each wikilink in the article to see whether it links to a dab or not. (Again, not a problem here.)
  • Clear the ambiguous link by finding the more precise link intended. Sometimes the intended term isn't offered and the disambiguation page should be edited, however, and some other times it may be appropriate to "unlink" the term.
  • For example, the article for NYC-based modelClaudia Wagnerhas an ambiguous linkWetter, for her hometown in Germany, near the location of a McDonald's where she was discovered by a photographer. It needs to be fixed probably by selectingWetter (Ruhr)orWetter, Hesse, from theWetterdab page's options. Using Google maps I see thatWetter (Ruhr)is closer to her birthplace,Wesel, but that is not enough to go on. Could any one of you who knows her, simply ask?
  • The current list of wp:NYC dabs is found by runningthis application of CatScan search tool(by clicking "Do it!" at bottom, and waiting about 2 minutes). Scroll down to see the results.
  • The Daily Disambigshows the overall wp:DPL project's progress.

Studebaker Building in Bedford-Stuyvesant vs. Crown Heights

Recently I had a discussion withUser:Beyond My Kenabout a commons category he created for the NYCL-registered Studebaker Building in Crown Heights, and I mentioned the fact that there was another Studebaker Building on Dean Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant. This one doesn't have such landmark status, but does anybody have any info about it anyhow? ---------User:DanTD(talk)02:37, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

  • The city's GIS map is not very helpful[1].It lists the building with a date of "1965 (estimated)" which is obviously not right - it most probably reflects the oldest item in the DOB's archives.
Thebuilding's websiteisn't any help either, it just says the building was "Formerly the Studebaker Service Station", which at least implies that it wasn't a showroom.BMK(talk)03:02, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
  • Or a factory. Something about that building doesn't convince me that it's from 1965 either. The design is minimalist enough, but it seems too Art Deco to me. Plus, Studebaker was pretty much limping towards its death at the time, and moved to Canada just before then. I find it hard to believe they would even consider building anything that big in the USA back then, let alone in New York City. ---------User:DanTD(talk)15:24, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
  • Yeah, exactly the reasons I didn't think 1965 was a good estimate. The GIS map is OK on dates when it's definite about them, but not so much when it uses estimates. BTW, I also checked the AIA guide, and it doesn't include the building, so no joy there.BMK(talk)18:27, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following arecent discussionatWP:VPR,there is consensus for an opt-in bot task thatautomatically assessesthe class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. New Hyde Park, New York

Hello, this is a question for WikiProject New York City. Does New Hyde Park, Nassau County, have unincorporated areas in Queens? I ask because there is a dispute going on atTalk:Omar_Mateen#Place_of_birth,along the lines that mass shooterOmar Mateenwas born in New Hyde Park, Queens.Kylo, Rey, & Finn Consortium(talk)01:15, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

No, there is no way a village in Nassau could include any unincorporated sections of New York City, they would all have to be in Nassau. Now, that doesn't mean that there might not be aneighborhoodof Queens which is called "New Hyde Park" because of its propinquity to the village in Nassau, but it could not in any way be official part of Nassau.BMK(talk)01:31, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
So look atthis site,which says:
3. New Hyde Park
New Hyde Park, Queens
The Queens New Hyde Park contains only a handful of streets, so it's much smaller than its Nassau cousin. The two are nearly the same -- with mostly single-family homes built from the 1920s to 1950s. They are both great neighborhoods for families. They also share a zip code: 11040.
New Hyde Park Village, Nassau Countyis an incorporated village just east of Floral Park.
So, it's a neighborhood in Queens. Remember that Nassau County used to be part of Queens County, but was separated from it when Greater NYC was created. It sounds like they put the dividing line through acommunity(no official status) called New Hyde Park, so most of it ended up in Nassau and a rump part ended up in Queens. To find out where the guy was born, Nassau or Queens, you're going to need to know the address of his place of birth.BMK(talk)01:37, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
@Beyond My Ken:Exactly what I thought. But the zip code of New Hyde Park, which is 11040, has parts in both Nassau and Queens. What I'm thinking is that Mateen was born inLong Island Jewish Medical Center, which is in both Queens and Nassau. I'm still trying to find sources for that. The discussion is atTalk:Omar Mateen#Birth place again.Kylo, Rey, & Finn Consortium(talk)01:10, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, the zips were assigned by the Feds for the convenience of the post offices and don't have to take into account county or city lines, and, obviously, as long as the portion of the hospital which is in each jurisdiction follows the applicable laws and regulations, there's not to stop them from building across the county line. (It may be apochryphal, but I've heard that there are houses in Maine in which part of the house is in the US and part is in Canada.)BMK(talk)02:47, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Meaning of "Manhattan, New York" and similar mentions

Many articles list a New York borough as the birth or death place of a person or as the location of a landmark in the form "Manhattan, New York" or "Manhattan, New York, US". In such cases, is "New York" supposed to refer to New York City or to New York State? As a foreigner, I can't tell, although my gut feeling would be to point to the city as the next administrative level up. Follow up question: would it be appropriate to list such places as "Manhattan, New York, NY, U.S." or would the extra "NY" be considered bad style? Your answers will help automate the disambiguation ofNew Yorklinks if therecent page moveis endorsed. —JFGtalk23:34, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

If "Manhattan, New York" is used, it can only mean "Manhattan, New York City". I don't think it has to be spelled out that way, though, because it wouldn't add anything. As for linking and disambiguating: any wikilink afterManhattanis unnecessary perWO:OVERLINK.In fact, even mentioning "US" is unnecessary. --Michael Bednarek(talk)06:45, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
It makes no difference. Manhattan is part of New York City which is part of New York state, so a person who died in Manhattan died in both New York City and New York state. ~~

Vandalism atCrime in New York City

I'm a little surprised, and upset, that vandals got away with putting bogus figures intoCrime in New York Cityfor three days straight, ending withthis version. This of course was following the dispute at the presidential debate about whether murder is on the rise, and someone brilliantly decided to change the figures to make it seem this was actually the case when it is not. Another vandal changed the total violent crime to 00000, so there was a mix... Anyway, both Trump and Clinton are based in New York City, so until mid-November I think we should try keep a close eye on any topics that may be cited in politics. Crime related articles are likely major targets, so feel free to add this one to your watchlist, if you're up for the challenge of monitoring it. 399 Park Avenue

Hello,

I am a Citi employee and would like to have the 399 Park Avenue page updated as the global headquarters have now moved downtown to 388-390 Greenwich Street. I recently went through this same exercise with the Citigroup page and now wish to do the same to the 399 Park Avenue page.

Please revise the first paragraph of the current 399 Park Avenue page with the following but keep the current hyperlinks:

399 Park Avenue is a 41-story office building that from 1961 to 2015 was the world headquarters of Citigroup in Manhattan, New York City. The company moved to the building from 55 Wall Street and is now headquartered at 388 Greenwich Street. 399 Park Avenue occupies the entire block between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue and 53rd Street and 54th Street. The building lot was assembled by Vincent Astor who initially planned to build a 46-story Astor Plaza on the site. Astor had problems completing the assembly of the lots of mostly residential buildings as a pharmacy held out.

Also, for the image caption to the right, please change "Citigroup Center" to "601 Lexington Avenue"

Thank you for reading through this request.

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. TheWikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challengehas recently started, based on the UK/IrelandWikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges likeWikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state likeWikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦Dr. Blofeld15:23, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Notice of Neutral point of view noticeboard discussion

Hello, WikiProject New York City. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion atWikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboardregarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

I have had many problems in past with this article, but the most recent problem is that the article fails to mention theCrown Heights riots, even if but to mention that Schneerson's motorcade was involved. Again my source, and my justification, for adding this to Schneerson's article is that the New York Times obituary[6],and every retrospective article I found on the riots, mentions Schneerson. When I add any mention there is a team of editors that raises extraneous and false claims. I would urge authors interested in this area to help edit some entry in this article that does justice to the link.

My entry, which I thought was the least controversial, although entered in the controversy section (should it have its own section or his legacy?) stated:

  • Crown Heights Riot

TheCrown Heights disturbancesin August 19, 1991, which became a central issue in a New York City mayoral race, were set off when a car in Rabbi Schneerson's motorcade went out of control and killed a 7-year-old black child. In the days that followed, a riot erupted in the neighborhood, reflecting existing tensions between Jewish and black residents. Two men, one of them a young Lubavitch adherent, were killed during the riots. A grand jury found no reason bring charges against anyone in the motorcade.[1][2]

I could live with a shorter version. My quibble is that an article on Schneerson should include the words: motorcade of... SchneersonandCrown Heights riotin the same paragraph. I could use help from editors providing some reasonable framework with how to proceed.Rococo1700(talk)05:25, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge name

Someone suggested that I should post a note here drawing interested parties’ attention to edits at theVerrazano-Narrows Bridgepage. This name should take a hyphen (-), not an en dash (–). In the context of bridge names, en dashes take the place of the word “to”: the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel is the Brooklyn-to-Battery Tunnel. But the Verrazano is not a bridge connecting the Verrazano & the Narrows. Rather, it’s 2 alternative names for the same thing (the Verrazano Bridge and the Narrows Bridge) smushed together. This is exactly analogous to when Ms. Doe & Mr. Roe marry to become Mr. and Ms. Doe-Roe: they use a hyphen. In other words, the rule is not “bridges and tunnels use an en dash instead of a hyphen in their names”; you have to look deeper.

I’m a professional copyeditor with many years’ experience editing to both American and British standards. That makes me a bona fide en-dash weenie—probably the weeniest en-dash weenie of them all—but to use one in Verrazano–Narrows makes no sense. It is a contrived construction that flies in the face of convention. You can tie yourself up in pretzels arguing that it's not a bridge over the Verrazano Narrows (the Narrows themselves not being named for Verrazzano), but the terms "Verrazano" and "Narrows" are still not coordinate ones. Really, though, what's wrong with it is that it snags the eye.

I had made this point on the VNB Talk page and, not hearing any objections after a week, posted it at Moves Requested. The move to Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has been made, and I’m now in the process of going thru What Links Here and tidying up. But I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of the reasoning behind the change so that nobody decides it must be a mistake and starts to undo it without discussion.

I’m also posting this at the Bridges project. Let’s direct discussion to the VNB talk page to keep it all in one place, if that is agreeable.Gould363(talk)17:29, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Categories

As some of you may have seen, because of the change ofNew Yorkfrom being targeted at the state to its becoming a DAB page, categories that were "X in New York" have been moved by bots to "X in New York (state)". Unfortunately, many of the entries in those categories really would be better categorized in "X in New YorkCity".I and a couple of others have been moving entries by hand, but it would all go a lot faster if others would join in as well. It's not only the" X architecture "categories, but also things such as" Clubhouse "," Concert halls "," Performing arts centers "," X churches "and so on.

When the category was "X in New York" the ambiguity as to whether "New York" meant the state or the city was a bit annoying, but the same ambiguity did allow for both entries to live together in the one category. Now that the cats are being specified as "New York (state)", it's worthwhile -- given the large number of entries that are located in the city -- to differentiate between them.

I look forward to any help that the members of this project would like to give.Beyond My Ken(talk)00:02, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Category:Bridges in New York City

I propose removing all the members of "Category:Bridges in New York City"that are already in any" Category:Bridges in <borough name> ". The reason is because of consistency with other similar categories named" <Structure type> in New York City ". For example, if something is in" Category:Buildings and structures in <borough name> ", it is not in"Category:Buildings and structures in New York City".As far as I know, this category is the only bridge-related category, or New York City-related category, that does notdiffuse.

I can see why this doesn't diffuse since it is a relatively small category and most bridges are in multiple boroughs. However, this doesn't create problems other than duplication across categories.epicgenius(talk)21:57, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

(ec) I understand your thinking, but the purpose of categorization is to make it easier to find things, and it's far from certain that the general reader is going to know what borough to find the bridge they're looking for in. Besides, many If not most) of the bridges are in two boroughs. No my feeling is that "Bridges in New York City" should be an all-inclusive master category.Beyond My Ken(talk)22:02, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
I see. I thought if the reader were to look for a bridge but didn't know which borough it was in, they would probably go to that page first and look at the categories there (same as with "Buildings and structures in New York City", etc.). But this works too. Anyway, let's see if any other editors think otherwise.epicgenius(talk)23:08, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Wow.Beyond My Ken(talk)12:09, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
In any case,c:Category:United Statesis rather a useless category that should really only have other categories in it, and no images. Or, if there are images, they should be of places which are clearly in the US but which are not distinctly identified. Having a category full of random pictures of places in the US is (as I said) pretty darn uselsss.Beyond My Ken(talk)12:14, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
I agree, and the sooner all the images are narrowed down to their specific locations, the sooner it'll become the metacat that it should be. ---------User:DanTD(talk)23:09, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Airport in Manhattan?

Somebody took a bunch of picture each with the name "Manhattan New York City 2009 PD," but they're obviously from one of the three major airports in the Tri-State area, which means there's no way in hell any of them could be in Manhattan. You'll find the disputed images in thecommons:Category:Airports in New York, and there's no way you can convince me they're from any heliports in Manhattan. My first guesses would've been eitherJohn F. Kennedy International AirportorLaGuardia Airport, but the New Jersey license plates on some of the ground crew makes me suspect it might beNewark Liberty International Airport. So who wants to take a guess at where they might really be? ---------User:DanTD(talk)15:22, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

While they're being evaluated, I've moved them intoCommons:Category:Unidentified airport, New York metro area.Beyond My Ken(talk)17:34, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
I don't believe that Lufthansa flies out of LaGuardia, so it would have to be Newark or Kennedy. The truck shown in one image is Continental's, and I think that Newark is a Continental hub, so my money's on Newark.Beyond My Ken(talk)17:38, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
I think it's Newark too, LGA and JFK don't look like that.epicgenius(talk)04:36, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Minds more eager than mine could probably follow the photographer's stream of pictures chronologically to identify the neighborhood or the route.Jim.henderson(talk)17:05, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Blessed Sacrament Church in Cypress Hills

Am I really the only person on Wikipedia who has any images of theBlessed Sacrament ChurchinCypress Hills, Brooklyn?---------User:DanTD(talk)16:34, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Because I thought this would've been a frequently photographed church here.
I've done a little research and created a Wikidata item for the church -Blessed Sacrament Church(Q41034422)- it can sometimes be a good staging ground for covering a building like this, as you don't need to demonstrate notability in the same way as Wikipedia.--Pharos(talk)00:58, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
No promises, but I may try to get out there this weekend. It's much harder for me to get to further-out parts of Brooklyn since I moved from midtown to "upstate Manhattan", but the church looks like it's right off the A train, so it's just a matter of find the 4 hours it would take to get there, take some pics (and some others in the area) and get back. Maybe I can do it on Friday when I have to be downtown anyway, we'll see.Beyond My Ken(talk)01:08, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Actually, it's off the J train, but I suppose you can transfer atBroadway Junction (New York City Subway).---------User:DanTD(talk)13:25, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

We'd like to invite WikiProject New York City folks to participate n this event, which is part of the largerOpen House New York Weekend. We've held some other in-person NYC events, but this is the first one in a long time with a strong local history focus (which is what attracted me to Wikipedia in the first place, like others here) and I hope people might find that interesting too.--Pharos(talk)15:40, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Flatiron District boundaries

Concerning the boundaries of the Flatiron District in NYC:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_District

This entry says: "Generally the Flatiron District is bounded by 20th Street, Union Square and Greenwich Village to the south; the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) or Seventh Avenue and Chelsea to the west; 25th Street and NoMad to the north; Rose Hill to the northeast, and Lexington Avenue/Irving Place, Gramercy Park to the east.[1][2]"

The Department of City Planning in NYC rezoning application for Ladies Mile says it is in the Flatiron District, it says: "This application seeks to rezone a 5- block area in the Flatiron District. The area is located on the midblocks between Fifth and Sixth avenues, from the centerline between 16th and 17th streets to the south, to 22nd Street on the north. Except for two properties in its southwest corner, the entire Rezoning Area is located within the Ladies Mile Historic District." See:https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/planning/download/pdf/plans/ladies-mile/ladiesmile.pdf

Quoting the NYT: "The boundaries of the Flatiron can be a subject of disagreement, but the district generally runs from the Avenue of the Americas to Park Avenue South between 14th and 23rd Streets, excluding the blocks adjacent to Union Square. Still, as often happens when a neighborhood becomes popular, some see its borders as expanded. The Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership, the six-year-old business improvement district that keeps streets clean and maintains two public plazas created on Broadway in 2008, places the northern boundary in the upper 20s, an area some call NoMad, or North of Madison Square Park."

Based on architectural style many other sites cite similar boundaries for the District: -https://www.compass.com/neighborhood-guides/nyc/flatiron/ -https://www.airbnb.com/locations/new-york/flatiron-district -http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/realestate/flatiron-district-living-in-profile-always-high-keeps-current-too.html

I understand the Flatiron/23rd St Bid and real-estate interests want to define the district differently, but their map does not make sense architecturally and runs counter to NYC's boundaries, NYT's boundaries and many other respected sources.

More research will find city documents that agree with the NYT's boundaries, more than the BID's boundaries. In the interest of accuracy we should change the boundaries inhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Districtto reflect this.— Precedingunsignedcomment added byRandomplace(talkcontribs)20:16, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point todisambiguationpages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members ofWikiProject Disambiguationhave been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

This is a Featured Article that needs a lot of copy editing and referencing fixes. I would preferably not want to send this article to Featured Article Review, but unless these issues are fixed, I willhave no choice but tosend this article to FAR.epicgenius(talk)17:34, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

You "will have no choice"? Of course you have a choice, nothing is mandatory in that respect. If you went to send it to FAR, that's fine, but please don't pretend that something isforcingyou to do so - it'sentirelyyour decision whether to send it or not.Beyond My Ken(talk)19:52, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, it's either me or the IP editor who placed all these tags on the page. If you want to help, fine, but don't lecture me about choices. I can either fix the issues or ignore these tags, but the problems aren't going to get any better if I choose the latter.epicgenius(talk)21:24, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
I won't "lecture you" if you stop using ridiculous rhetoric like "I will have no choice". If the tags are inappropriate, remove them, if not, fix them.Beyond My Ken(talk)21:49, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
I am in the process of doing that. I have also struck out the "no choice" wording that you object to so strongly.epicgenius(talk)22:00, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Ex-Bloomingdale's Warehouse and NYCHA

The formerBloomingdale'sWarehouse on 49th Avenue in Long Island City is currently an office owned by theNew York City Housing Authority,as you'd be able to see if you zoom in on the picture below, although it's not a public housing project. ---------User:DanTD(talk)04:39, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

So, how exactly would this be categorized within the NYCHA category?
