Early life

Ewell was born inLong Beach, California,and raised inSeal Beach.[2]She studied dance, singing, and acting at the Orange County Song & Dance Company inWestminster, California.[2]Ewell was spotted by atalent agentwhile taking an acting class around 1999, and asked to go on an audition.[3]

Career

Ewell first appeared on the television seriesFreaks and Geeksin 2000, playing Maureen Sampson in the episode "Carded and Discarded",directed byJudd Apatow.[2]She starred on thesoap operaThe Bold and the Beautifulfrom 2004–2005, and has guest-starred on the TV seriesThe O.C.,Boston Public,Veronica Mars,Close to HomeandEntourage.She had a role in the filmJust My Luck,starringLindsay Lohan,and inMaterial Girls,starringHilaryandHaylie Duff,in 2006. She had a starring role in the filmSenior Skip Day.

Ewell co-starred inThe CWtelevision seriesThe Vampire Diariesfor the first seven episodes in 2009. Ewell described her character,Vicki Donovan,toStarmagazine as "a really slutty high school student", and "a troublemaker".[4]Vicki was the first human on the series turned into a vampire. Ewell was killed off the show when her character was staked in the heart by Stefan (Paul Wesley) in order to save Elena (Nina Dobrev) in theHalloween-themed episode "Haunted".[5]Ewell hinted in November 2009 that she was still under contract for the role and might return to the show, but series creator,Kevin Williamson,stated that there were no plans to bring her back.[6]Her character did return however in several episodes as a ghost on the “other side”, she featured in the finale of thesecond season,the start ofseason 3and was a major feature role in the series finale ofThe Vampire Diaries (season 8)when she is briefly brought back from the dead by the titular Vampire Katherine Pierce to help her destroy the town of mystic falls.[7][8]

Ewell played a children's fashion designer in the 2011Hallmark ChannelTV movie,Keeping Up With The Randalls,alongsideThad Luckinbill,Roma Downey,Marion Rossand McKenna Jones.[9]She next appeared on theA&Etelevision series,The Glades,that year, as a waitress suspected of murder in the episode "Beached".[10]In 2012, she guest starred alongsideGabrielle Dennison theTNTdrama,Franklin & Bash,playing a Navy sailor facing acourt-martial.[11]Ewell starred oppositeAustin StowellandDanny Gloverin the 2013Hallmark Movie Channelfilm,Shuffelton’s Barbershop,as Norma, acountry musicsinger and songwriter. The film was named after a 1950sNorman Rockwellpainting that featuredbluegrassmusicians playing in a barbershop.[12]

Ewell starred in the horror filmThe Demented(2013) alongsideSarah ButlerandMichael Welch.[13]She also starred in the 2014Lifetimemovie,Deadly Daycare,withChristy Carlson Romano.In April 2016, Ewell began filming the feature,2 Years and 8 Days,withRyan MerrimaninNew Mexico.[14]The film, retitled2 Years of Lovewas released on January 24, 2017.

She portrayed Nora Truman (formerly named Mara) in The CW 2019 television seriesRoswell, New Mexico.In 2020, Ewell guest starred on CW'sBatwomanas the DC comics villainNocturna.[15]

Personal life

As of 2009, Ewell lives inLos Angeles,California.In 2000 she toldSophisticatemagazine that she enjoyspainting,rock climbing,andrappellingin her free time.[16]She also includesdancingandwhitewater raftingamong her hobbies. She was on her high school'ssurfingteam.

In May 2015, she got engaged to actor and modelTanner Novlan.[17][18]The couple married on September 12, 2015.[19]

In March 2019, Ewell announced that she and her husband were expecting their first child.[20]On July 16, 2019, Ewell gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Poppy.[21]In February 2022, Ewell announced that she and her husband were expecting their second child.[22]On June 6, 2022, Ewell gave birth to their second child, a son named Jones.[23]
