Themodifier letter right half ring(ʾ) is a character of the UnicodeSpacing Modifier Lettersrange.[1]It is used inromanizationto transliterate theSemiticletteralephand the Arabic letterhamzaafter it was used byThe Encyclopedia of Islam(later theInternational Journal of Middle East Studies),[2]representing the sound/ʔ/(aglottal stop,as in Arabic ءhamza). In informal contexts, thebacktick⟨`⟩ or theapostrophe⟨'⟩ is commonly used as a substitute.
