4motionis a registeredtrademarkofVolkswagen AG,used exclusively onVolkswagen-brandedautomobileswithfour-wheel drive(4WD) systems. Volkswagen has previously used the term "Syncro"for its 4WD models, such as inVolkswagen T3.[1]

Of the Volkswagen Group's othermarques,the "quattro"nomenclature is used for 4WDAudicars. Sister companiesŠkodasimply uses the nomenclature "4x4" after the model name, whereasPorschemerely uses "4".[2]

None of the above trademarks is specific to any particular 4WDsystemor technology being employed. Generally, Volkswagen would useHaldex Tractionclutchsystem on their "4motion"transverse enginedcars. Forlongitudinal enginedcars, they would use aTorsenlimited-slip differential-based 4WD system or lockable centre differential instead.[3]
