A. J. Reid

Anthony (Tony) John Reid(ca 1909[1]– February 9, 1993) was a politician inManitoba,Canada. He served in theLegislative Assembly of Manitobafrom 1958 to 1962, originally for theCooperative Commonwealth Federationand later for its successor party, theNDP.[2]

Born inEast Kildonan, Manitoba,Reid worked 42 years for theCanadian Pacific Railway.[1]

He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the1958 provincial election,[2]defeatingProgressive ConservativeJ.E. Willisby 111 votes in the northeast Winnipeg constituency ofKildonan.He was re-elected[2]over Willis by 148 votes in the1959 election,despite a provincial swing to the Progressive Conservatives.

During the1962 provincial election,the, PC candidateJames Millsdefeated Reid[2]by only four votes after two recounts on January 4, 1963, after a judicial recount.

Reid was known as a maverick who drifted from the CCF line on some issues.[citation needed]After 1963, he returned to municipal politics as analdermanfor East Kildonan.[1]
