Aidan Turner(born 19 June 1983) is an Irish actor. He began his career in theRTÉmedical dramaThe Clinic(2008–2009) and theBBCseriesDesperate Romantics(2009). He later gained attention for co-starring as one of the main leads in the popularBBC ThreeseriesBeing Human(2009–2011), and for playing the dwarfKíliinPeter Jackson’sThe Hobbittrilogy (2012–2014), before starring as theeponymous characterin theBBC adaptationofWinston Graham'sPoldark(2015–2019).

Early life and education
editAidan Turner was born at home inClondalkin,a suburban town ofDublin,[1]on 19 June 1983.[2][3]The family moved later toWalkinstown.[1]
Turner attended secondary school atSt Mac Dara's Community CollegeinTempleoguebefore leaving to join his older brother atFirhouseCommunity College, where, he said, he "probably wasn't a great student".[4]
Before becoming an actor, Turner was a successfulballroom dancer,once obtaining third place in the adult section of the Irish National Championships.[1]After finishing secondary school, he briefly worked as an apprentice electrician, alongside his father. After he saw a notice up in Dublin'sGaiety School of Acting,and having become interested in acting while working in a cinema, he applied.[5][6][7]He graduated from the Gaiety School of Acting in 2004.[5]
Career
editAfter graduating, Turner appeared in several theatre plays, includingThe Plough and the Stars,Romeo and Juliet,andA Cry from Heaven.[5][8][9]
Turner's television acting career began in 2007 with an uncredited appearance on the first episode ofThe Tudors.[10]In the same year he produced and starred in the filmPorcelain,directed by Gavin Cleland, which was shot in a convent in Dublin. However only a trailer of the movie was ever released.[11]Between 2008 and 2009, he appeared in arecurring roleonThe Clinic.[12][13]Appearing in 18 episodes as Ruairí McGowan, he followedThe Clinicwith a BBC production,Desperate Romantics.[10][14]He portrayedDante Gabriel Rossettiin all six episodes of the show, which aired in 2009.[10][15][16]
Turner played the vampireJohn Mitchellon the supernatural drama programmeBeing Human[17][18]during the first three series from 2009 to 2011, for which he received widespread praise.[19][20][21]
His film career began with twoshort films,The Sound of PeopleandMatterhorn,both in 2007. He later played Mal in thethrillerfeature filmAlarm(2008).[22][23]
His role onBeing Humanbrought Turner to the attention ofSir Peter Jackson,who cast him as the dwarfKíliinThe Hobbit trilogy(2012–2014).[5][24][25]In 2014, he won theEmpire Award for Best Male Newcomerfor the second film in the series,The Desolation of Smaug,which had been released the previous year.[7]In 2013, he also played shadowhunter-turned-werewolf Luke Garroway inThe Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.[10]
In the 2015 BBC TV miniseriesAnd Then There Were None,based on theAgatha Christienovel, he plays the cynicalmercenaryPhilip Lombard.[26]
Turner performed the title role of Ross Poldark in the2015 revivalof theBBCseries.[5][27][28]At theNational Television Awardsceremony in 2016, Turner was presented with the "Impact Award" for his performance inPoldark.[29]
SincePoldarkended in 2019, Turner has led the Italian seriesLeonardoand also had a role in the ITV police proceduralThe Suspectas Dr Joseph O'Loughlin.
Personal life
editIn 2017, Turner met actressCaitlin FitzGerald.He also bought an 18th-century house in East London that year.[30][31]The couple married in August 2020;[32]they have a child together, born in January 2022.[33]
