Alexander Valentinovich Novak(Russian:Александр Валентинович Новак;born 23 August 1971 inAvdiivka,Donetsk Oblast,Soviet Union) is a Russian politician who is a currentDeputy Prime Minister of Russiasince November 2020.

Previously, he was theMinister of Energy of Russiabetween 2012 and 2020, before being replaced in November 2020 by the general director ofRusHydro,Nikolay Shulginov.
Career
editIn 1993, he graduated fromNorilsk Industrial Instituteas a specialist on Economy and Management inMetallurgy.
Between 1993 and 1997, he was Head of the Financial Bureau of the Accounting Department of theNorilskMining and Smelting Complex. In 1997 to 1999, he headed thetax planningdepartment of the complex.[1]
Entry into local and regional politics (2000–2008)
editFrom 2000 to 2002, he wasNorilskDeputy Mayor for economics and finance, Norilsk's first Deputy Mayor.[2]Between 2002 and 2007, he was head of the Main Finance Management of theKrasnoyarsk KraiAdministration, Deputy Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Krai and Head of the Main Finance Authority of the Krasnoyarsk Krai.
Federal civil servant (2008–2012)
editFrom September 2008 to May 2012, he was the DeputyFinance Minister of the Russian Federation.
Federal politician (2012–present)
editIn May 2012, he was appointed as the Energy Minister inDmitry Medvedev's Cabinet.
On 15 January 2020, Medvedev resigned his cabinet afterPresidentVladimir Putindelivered thePresidential Address to the Federal Assembly,in which the latter proposed several amendments to the constitution.[3]
On 21 January 2020, he obtained the position Energy Minister inMikhail Mishustin's Cabinet.[4]
On10 November 2020, Mishustin exchangedhis Energy Ministry post for theDeputy Prime Ministerfor the Fuel–Energy Complex.[5]
Novak was a keynote speaker at the 2022 Russian Energy Week forum, which was held in Moscow from 12–14 October.[6]
On 16 March 2023, Novak met withSaudi Arabia's Energy Minister Prince,Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saudin Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to discuss continued Saudi-Russian cooperation withinOPEC+.[7]
In May 2023, Novak and Prime MinisterMikhail Mishustinvisited Beijing and met with Chinese PresidentXi Jinping.Novak said thatRussian energy supplies to Chinawill increase by 40 percent year-on-year in 2023.[8]
Sanctions
editIn September 2022, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Novak in relation to theRussian annexation of four Ukrainian Oblasts,including his own native Donetsk.[9]
Personal life
editOn 18 August 2020, RussianPrime MinisterMikhail Mishustinannounced that Novak tested positive forCOVID-19.[10]
Awards, honours and directorships
editIn 2004, he was distinguished by the Governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In 2006, he was rewarded with the medal "For Distinguished Service in Organizing the All-Russia Agricultural Census 2006" of theRussian Federal Statistics Service.[11]
Since July 2010, he has been a member ofUnited Aircraft CorporationBoard of Directors.[citation needed]
