Walter Alleyne Ireland(19 January 1871,Manchester– 23 December 1951)[1]was a British traveller and author on the tropical colonies of the British empire.[2]

His mother was the biographerAnnie Elizabeth Nicholson Irelandand his father was the journalistAlexander Ireland;his brother was the composerJohn Ireland.[3]Educated atManchester Grammar Schooland theUniversity of Berlin,Alleyne Ireland visitedAustralia,Canada,India,Burma,the Malay Peninsula,Java,Borneo,French Indo-China, thePhilippines,the West Indies and British Guiana. In 1902–1904 for theTimes of Londonhe wrote twelve articles on British colonial administration in the tropics. He lectured atCornell University,theUniversity of Chicagoand theLowell Instituteand was on the staff of theNew York World.[4]

Alleyne Ireland served as one ofJoseph Pulitzer's private secretaries, an experience he recorded inAn Adventure with a Genius: Recollections of Joseph Pulitzer.
