Andrea Aghini Lombardi(born 29 December 1963 inLivorno,Tuscany[1]) is an Italianrallydriver. He won the 1992Rallye Sanremoand took four other podium finishes in theWorld Rally Championshipfrom 1992 to 1995. In 1992, he also won theRace of Champions,after beatingCarlos Sainzin the semi-final andColin McRaein the final.[2]

Career

Aghini began his rallying career on national events with aPeugeot 205 GTIin 1984.[1]He debuted in theWorld Rally Championshipdriving aRenault 5 GT Turboat his home event, theRallye San Remo,in1986.He retired from the rally after a turbo problem, but two years later, he won theGroup Nclass of the event. For the1991 season,Aghini got a contract with theLancia-supportedJolly Clubteam for two WRC events; the Sanremo and theRally Catalunya.He drove hisDelta Integrale 16Vto fifth place in both rallies, taking his first drivers' world championship points.

These results earned Aghini a drive withMartini Racing,Lancia's factory team, for thefollowing season.He finished sixth at theTour de Corse,and then edged out his team-mateJuha Kankkunento take his first and only world rally win in Sanremo. Aghini's second podium finish followed in Catalunya. After Lancia withdrew from the WRC, he moved back to Jolly Club to partner defending world championCarlos Sainz.His only podium finish of the season came at theRally Portugal,where he took third place behind Ford'sFrançois DelecourandMiki Biasion.

In1994,Aghini partnered Kankkunen andDidier Auriolat theToyotafactory team in a few events and finished third at the Tour de Corse with aCelica Turbo 4WD.He repeated this feat in the1995 season,driving aMitsubishi Lancer Evolution 3for theTeam Mitsubishi Ralliart.With consistent results, he also equalled his career-best seventh place in the drivers' championship from 1992. Aghini then became less active in the WRC. He won the Italian Rally Championship with aToyota Corolla WRCin 1998 and 1999. In 1998, he also finished runner-up in theEuropean Rally Championship.[3]
