He was discovered by record producersRocco Did It Again!and Mike Blumstein in 2012, and subsequently signed with their label, Chase Records in a joint venture withRepublic Recordsin June of that year. His 2012 debut single, "Say Somethin'"and its follow-up,"Say You're Just a Friend"(featuringFlo Rida) both receivedgoldcertifications by theRecording Industry Association of America(RIAA), while his 2013 single, "What About Love"did so and marked his first entry on theBillboardHot 100.All three were included on histitularly-titleddebutextended play(2013), which was released only in Japan. In September of that year, his recording contract entered a triple joint venture withBirdman'sCash Money Records,an imprint of Republic.[6]
His 2014 single, "Mmm Yeah"(featuringPitbull) received platinum certification by the RIAA and became his highest charting song on theBillboardHot 100—at number 49. It served as lead single for his second extended play (EP)The Secret(2014), which peaked at number five on theBillboard200.After the release of his 2015 single "Dirty Work",he parted ways with the labels in favor of Pitbull's Mr. 305 Inc. The song entered theBillboard JapanHot 100and receivedplatinumcertification by theRecording Industry Association of Japan(RIAJ), leading his debut studio album,Dirty Work – The Album(2017) to be released exclusively in the country—where it entered theOricon Albums Chart.Preceded by a number of follow-up mixtapes and EPs, his second album,A Lone Star Story(2023) marked a full departure from pop in favor ofcountry music.
Early life
Austin Harris Mahone[4]was born inSan Antonio, Texas,the son of Michele Lee (née Demyanovich) and Charles Edgar Mahone.[7][8]His father died when he was a year and a half old, and he was raised as aCatholic[9]by his single mother.[10]Mahone is ofEnglish,French,German,andSlovakdescent.[11]He attendedLady Bird Johnson High Schoolin San Antonio but left after his freshman year and was homeschooled at his grandmother's house.[12]
Career
2010–2014:Extended PlayandThe Secret
Mahone began his career by posting videos onYouTubein June 2010.[13]More music videos followed, and by January 2011 he began to build an online following.[14]In October 2011, Mahone posted a video coveringJustin Bieber's "Mistletoe".[15][16]Mahone has cited Bieber as his inspiration.[17][18]
On February 14, 2012, Mahone independently released his first single, "11:11", to iTunes.[19]On June 5, 2012, he released his second single worldwide, "Say Somethin".On August 28, 2012, Mahone announced that he had been officially signed to Chase/Republic Records.[20]In November 2012, Mahone signed a deal to become the new "Teen Ambassador" forLil Wayne's Trukfit fashion clothing line.[21] He has filmedcommercialsforMcDonald's[22]and Hot Nuts, a Mexican snack.[23]On December 3, 2012, Mahone released a song titled "Say You're Just a Friend"featuring rapperFlo Ridaas a digital download.[24]He later dropped the piano version of the song and revealed why he released the piano rendition of the song, explaining "I knew my fans love the original version, but I saw a lot of comments saying that they couldn't really hear my voice, so I wanted to reassure them that I can sing the song. I thought it'd be cool to not only have the original version but also the piano version and change it up."[25]On May 29, 2013, he released his debut EP,Extended Play,in Japan only.[26]
In June 2013, Mahone released a song called "What About Love".[27]The music video won MTV's Artists to Watch atMTV Video Music Awards,[28]and he was chosen as one of the opening acts ofTaylor Swift'sRed Tour.[29]
In July 2013, Mahone featured in "Magik 2.0",a song byBecky GforThe Smurfs 2soundtrack. It was a rendition ofB.o.B's "Magic".[30]In December 2013, Mahone was named a "Digital and Brand Strategist" forAquafina's FlavorSplash, a new line of flavored sparkling water targeted towards teens.[31]On October 17, 2013, he kicked off his first ever headlining tour, MTV's Artist to Watch Tour.[32]On November 13, Mahone released a song "Banga Banga"as a promotional single.[33]"Mmm Yeah"was released as the lead single fromThe Secret,his second EP, on January 27, 2014.The Secretwas later released on May 27, 2014. 2015–2018:This Is Not the AlbumandDirty Work
During 2015, he continued to independently release music. Five new songs titled "Say My Name", "Places", "Waiting For This Love", "Someone Like You" and "Torture" were released for free download through his officialSoundCloudpage.[35]Mahone starred inBecky G's music video for her song "Lovin' So Hard",whom he dated that time for five months. The video was released on May 6, 2015.[36]On July 1, 2015, Mahone released "Dirty Work",the lead single from his upcoming debut album.[37]In an interview withBillboard,he stated that the album would be released by the end of 2015.[38]On September 5, 2015, it was announced that he will be joiningT.I.andPia Miain support ofJason Deruloon his Australian tour for three dates beginning on November 20.[39]
In August 2015, he was picked asElvis Duran'sArtist of the Monthand was featured onNBC'sTodayshow broadcast nationally in the United States where he performed live his single "Dirty Work"after an interview withHoda Kotband temporary hostJenna Bush Hager.[40]Over the course of September and October 2015, Mahone continued to independently release new music, with the tracks "Do It Right", "On Your Way", "Not Far" and "Put It On Me"being released for free download on his SoundCloud page.[35]In an interview withTeen Vogueon November 13, 2015, Mahone announced that he would be releasing a free mixtape before the end of the year.[41]On December 15, 2015, Mahone revealed the title of the mixtape,This Is Not the Album.He also revealed the cover art and announced that it would be released on December 17, 2015.[42]In May 2016, Mahone became one of the faces ofMacy'sAmerican Icons campaign. He released two singles in August 2016: "Send It"featuringRich Homie Quanand "Way Up".[43]On December 7, 2016, via Facebook Live, Mahone announced his second mixtape, titledForMe+You,which was released on December 29, 2016.
"Lady" served as the lead single, a remix of the 2001 "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"byModjo,featuringPitbull.The song was released as a preview on December 22, 2016, and released officially on April 19, 2017.[44] On New Year's Eve, Mahone performed "Lady" onPitbull's New Year's Revolution.He has since then performed at twoDolce & Gabbanafashion shows in Italy with his new work. He performed two shows while on the Pitbull After Dark Cruise. At the end of March 2017 he performed at POPSPRING Japan with his Hot 100 song "Dirty Work"which peaked at #1. He has now begun a campaign working withFossil. Mahone will be kicking off his A Tour For Me+You on Wednesday, May 31, starting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, going through Thursday, June 30, ending in Los Angeles, California. On Friday, April 12, Mahone released a new song, "Creatures of the Night", with DJ and record producerHardwell.
Since 2017, Japanese comedian Blouson Chiemi started to use "Dirty Work"as the background music of her popular comedy routine, which led the song to peak number 4 on the Japan Hot 100 Chart,[45]also ending up being certified gold in the country.[46]Later, Mahone announced the release of his debut studio album exclusively in the country. It also included his collaborations "Lady" withPitbulland "Creatures of the Night"withHardwellwhich reached the number 1 position onBillboard's USDance Club Songschart.[47][48]
The album was released on October 18, 2017, accompanied with the released of "Perfect Body", exclusively in Japan.[49][50]The song was featured in a commercial for the Japaneseshampoo"Moist, Diane".[51]The album's release day, Mahone put out on digital platforms and streaming services two countdown songs internationally: "I Don't Believe You" and "Found You".[52]
On May 16, 2018, Mahone released the extended play,Oxygenexclusively in Japan.[53][54]
2019–present:A Lone Star Story
On February 4, 2019, Mahone released the single "Why Don't We",[55]which is penned byCharlie Puth[56]and categorized as a fusion of modern pop and old schoolR&Bunder the 90s' influences.[57]The music video was released on March 2, 2019, onYouTube.[58][56][59][60]
In October 2020, Mahone announced he was joiningOnlyFans.[61]He also released a new single called "Summer Love", on October 16, 2020, and which he previewed through OnlyFans.[62]In November 2020, Mahone released "Miami", a collaboration with Mario Bautista &Lalo Ebratt.The single peaked at number 31 inMexico.
In January 2023, Mahone collaborated with Fueled by 808,Kid RockandJimmie Allenon the single "No Limits".[63]In February 2023, Mahone released the single "Withdrawal", which was produced byJim Jonsin.[64]On June 5, 2023, Mahone announced his new album,A Lone Star Story,which was released on June 23, 2023. Along with this announcement, he released the albums lead single, "Kuntry".[65]In an interview withBillboard,Mahone shared, "I started [the album] at the beginning of thepandemic,so it's definitely been a long time coming [...] I grew up on country music, I feel very comfortable in that space, even though I’ve never done country music in my life before. It feels right. "[66]

Mahone briefly dated Cuban-American singerCamila Cabelloin 2014.[67]He dated model Katya Elise Henry for less than a year. The two split in February 2017.[68]
Legal Issues
On March 22, 2023, theU.S. Securities and Exchange Commissionfiled charges against Mahone, along with several other celebrities, for illegally promoting the securities of crypto companies.[69]According to the SEC complaint, Mahone was paid approximately $20,000 inBitcointo tweet, "When $TRX hits 50 cents and $BTT hits 1 cent I'm getting a tattoo of@justinsuntron’s face. "[70]
