Barry Mendel(born 1963) is an Americanfilm producer.Mendel first producedWes Anderson’sRushmorestarringJason SchwartzmanandBill Murray,which won twoFilm Independent Spirit AwardsforBest DirectorandBest Supporting Actor.[1][2]This was followed byThe Sixth Sense,directed byM. Night Shyamalan,which was nominated for sixAcademy AwardsincludingBest Picture.[3]Subsequently, he produced Shyamalan's follow-up,Unbreakable,[4]then went back to work with Anderson onThe Royal Tenenbaums,which was Oscar-nominated forBest Original Screenplay.[5]Their collaboration continued onThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,[6]which Mendel followed by producingJoss Whedon’s feature film directorial debut,Serenity.[7]Mendel next conceived, developed and producedMunich,[8]directed bySteven Spielberg,which was nominated for five Academy Awards includingBest Picture.[9]He then producedWhip It,Drew Barrymore’s debut as a feature director, which starredElliot Pageand Kristen Wiig.[10]Mendel produced another film with Page,Peacock,which co-starredCillian MurphyandSusan Sarandon.[11]
In recent years, Mendel andJudd Apatowhave become frequent collaborators. Mendel produced the Apatow-directedFunny People,[12]This Is 40,[13]Trainwreck[14]and most recentlyThe King of Staten IslandstarringPete Davidson.[15]The pair also producedBridesmaids[16]andThe Big Sick,[17]which were both Oscar-nominated forBest Original Screenplay,bringing to five the number of screenplay nominations for films Mendel has produced.
He also producedSundance Special Jury Prize-winning musicalGod Help the Girl,a collaboration with Stuart Murdoch of the Scottish bandBelle and Sebastian,who wrote and directed the film.[18]
