Beatrice Kristi Ilejay Laus[a](born 3 June 2000), known professionally asBeabadoobee(/bbəˈdb/;bee-bə-DOO-bee[9]), is a Filipino-British[10][11]singer-songwriter. From 2018 to 2021, she released five extended plays (EPs) under the independent labelDirty Hit:Lice(2018),Patched Up(2018),Loveworm(2019),Space Cadet(2019) andOur Extended Play(2021). Her debut studio albumFake It Flowerswas released in October 2020, and received critical acclaim. Her second studio album,Beatopia,was released on 15 July 2022, which spawned the hit "The Perfect Pair".Her third studio album,This Is How Tomorrow Moves,was released on 9 August 2024; it became her first album to peak atop theUK Albums Chart.

Early life and education

Laus was born inIloilo Cityin the Philippines[12]on 3 June 2000[13][1]and moved to the United Kingdom with her parents at the age of three.[14][15]She grew up inWest Londonlistening tooriginal Pinoy musicas well aspopandrockmusic from the 1990s. While she was a teenager, she listened toindie rockartists includingKaren O,Yeah Yeah Yeahs,FloristandAlex G.[1]

She studied atSacred Heart High School,an all-girls Catholic school, before completing herthirteenth yearatHammersmith Academy.[7][16][17]Laus spent seven years learning to play the violin, before getting her first guitar second-hand at the age of 17.[18]She also learned through watchingYouTubetutorials produced by other accomplished guitarists.[1]She was inspired byKimya Dawsonand theJunosoundtrackto start making music.[1]She identifies asbisexual.[2]Laus says that she can understand thePhilippinelanguagesHiligaynonandTagalogfluently, but cannot speak them.[19]

Career

2017–2019: "Coffee" and early EPs

The first song Beabadoobee wrote on her guitar was "Coffee".[20]She took her professional name as a joke[21]when her friend and producer Oscar Lang was preparing to upload "Coffee" and suggested she release her music under an artist name. Beabadoobee was a name she had invented for herfinstaaccount because none of her names were being accepted byInstagram.[22][23]

She released "Coffee" as well as acoverofKaren O's "The Moon Song"in September 2017.[18]"Coffee" gained over 300,000 views on YouTube,[15]as well as the attention ofDirty Hit Records.[24]She signed to the label in April 2018.[25][26]This was followed by the release of her debut EPLicein March 2018 and her second EPPatched Upin December 2018.[15][27]In January 2019, Beabadoobee was placed withBillie EilishonNME's annual list of "essential new artists", the "NME 100".[28]She subsequently released her third EP titledLoveworm.[29][20][30]Beabadoobee released an acoustic version of this EP titledLoveworm (Bedroom Sessions)in July 2019.[31]

In September 2019, Beabadoobee embarked on her first tour supportingClairoon herImmunity Tour,[32][33]before releasing her fourth EP,Space Cadet,in October 2019. Beabadoobee subsequently made the front cover ofNMEon 25 October 2019.[14]She was shortlisted for theRising Star Awardat the2020 Brit Awardsin December 2019.[34]In November 2019, Beabadoobee released a pair ofSpotify Singles,one being a cover of "Don't You Forget About Me"bySimple Mindsas well as a version of "She Plays Bass" recorded inAbbey Road Studiosin London.[35]In December 2019, Beabadoobee was longlisted in the annualBBCpoll of music critics,Sound of 2020.[36]

2020–2021: "Death Bed",Fake It Flowers,andOur Extended Play

In February 2020, Beabadoobee performed at the 2020NMEAwardsafter winning the Radar Award.[37]She supported labelmatesthe 1975on theirMusic for Cars Tourfor both the U.K. leg in February 2020.[38]She was scheduled to also support the band during the North American leg of this tour in April 2020,[39]however it was postponed due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[40]

A sample of Beabadoobee's 2017 debut single "Coffee" was used on Canadian rapperPowfu's 2019 single, "Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head)".[41]The song became a massively successfulsleeper hitafter going viral on the appTikTokin early 2020,[42]becoming Beabadoobee's first official chart entry in her career, both locally and internationally.[43]By April 2020, it had entered the Top 5 in several countries including the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. It earned goldcertificationstatus in Belgium, Canada, France, Mexico and New Zealand, as well as Platinum or higher in the U.S. and the U.K. among several other countries. Speaking about her reaction to the popularization of "Death Bed", Beabadoobee said, "I'm not going to lie, it was overwhelming… I kinda hated it. I hated more people knowing about the first song I'd ever written and not my others. I was so stubborn but I grew into it and accepted that's just how life works. I was extremely grateful for its existence and it's only given me more opportunities."[44]

Beabadoobee announced her debut studio album,Fake It Flowers,and released its lead single "Care" on 14 July 2020.[45][46]In early August 2020, she released the album's second single, "Sorry", and revealed the album's track listing,cover artand official release date.[47]Beabadoobee released "Worth It" as the third single,[48]"How Was Your Day?" as the fourth single,[49]and "Together" as the fifth and final single ofFake It Flowers.[50]The album was released on 16 October 2020 to critical acclaim and spent one week in theUK Albums Chartat number 8.[51]According to sales in the United States,Billboardranked Beabadoobee as the Top New Rock Artist of 2020.[52]In 2021, she embarked on a headlining tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland to support the album.[53][54]

Beabadoobee released the single "Last Day on Earth" on 24 March, produced and co-written byMatty HealyandGeorge Danielof the 1975.[55]The musician announced that the single is taken from her EPOur Extended Play,which she said that she wrote with her labelmates "on the countryside".[56]

2022–present:BeatopiaandThis Is How Tomorrow Moves

Her second album,Beatopia,was announced on 23 March 2022. It was released on 15 July 2022 throughDirty Hitand spawned theR.I.A.A.Gold certified song "The Perfect Pair."[57]

In January 2023, Beabadoobee posted the snippet of an unreleased song on TikTok, which soon went viral across the website due to its popularity with couples and the approach of the upcoming holiday. "Glue Song"was later released onValentine's Day,14 February 2023, with another version featuringClairoreleased on 17 April 2023 which charted in several countries. The collaboration gained significant attention and marked a continued evolution in her sound, blending chamber pop with heartfelt lyrics inspired by her personal experiences.[58]

Starting in March 2023, Beabadoobee toured in Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark. Beabadoobee also performed as an opening act on twelve shows of the US leg ofTaylor Swift's 2023The Eras Tour.[59]

On 29 June 2023, Beabadoobee announced that she would cancel her European tour due to an unspecified illness.[60]She then announced a new single on 11 July 2023, called "The Way Things Go",which was released on 19 July.[61]Beabadoobee then released a new single withLaufey,"A Night to Remember", which was released on 20 October 2023.[62]

Her third studio album,This Is How Tomorrow Moves,was released on 9 August 2024,[63]which went on to debut at number 1 in the UK, making it her first number-one album.[64]

Laus has citedElliott Smith,Mac DeMarco,the Moldy Peaches,Pavement,Mazzy Star,the Beatles,Simon and Garfunkel,andDaniel Johnstonas her musical influences.[4][15]She has a tattoo of Johnston's artwork from the cover of his albumContinued Story with Texas Instruments.[65]In a 2018 interview withVice,she expressed plans to make film soundtracks in the future as they heavily inspired her to make music.[15]Laus' musical style is also deeply influenced by 90s alternative rock andshoegazebands likeThe Cure,[66]The Smiths,[66]My Bloody Valentine,[67]andThe Smashing Pumpkins.[68]
