Black Dog Books publish books in all genres but have a main focus onchildren's literature.[1]The company's books are distributed in Australia byMurdoch Books,New Zealand byScholastic Corporation,and in South Africa byRynew Educational Enterprises.[2]Black Dog Books is also a production house, producing books forHorwitz MartinandPearson Education.[1]The company has published multiple award-winning and short-list nominee titles.[3]Their first winning title was in 2002 withWhen Mum Was LittlebyMini Gosswhich won theCrichton Award for Children's Book Illustration.[4]A notable author that they publish isCarole Wilkinsonwhose works published by Black Dog Books have won more than five awards, including theChildren's Book of the Year Award: Younger Readersand theAurealis Award for best young-adult novel.[3][5][6]Other winning authors include Sue Lawson, Mark Norman,Pamela Freeman,Danny Katz,Ben Beaton, Leon Davidson, and Paula Hunt.[3]

In July 2011, it was announced that the company had been acquired byWalker Booksand would become an imprint.[7][8]
