Early life
Blake Ellender Brown was born on August 25, 1987, in theTarzananeighborhood ofLos Angeles, California.[4]Her mother, Elaine (née McAlpin), worked as a talent scout, and her father,Ernie Lively,was an actor.[5]Lively was named after her grandmother's brother.[6][7]She has an older brother,Eric,and three half-siblings from her mother's previous marriage,Lori,Robyn,andJason.Her parents and siblings have all worked in theentertainment industry.[8][9]
During her childhood, Lively accompanied her parents to the acting classes they taught, as they did not want to leave her with a babysitter. She said that watching her parents teach helped her learn the "drills" and gain confidence as she got older and began working in the industry.[9][10]She made her professional debut at age 10, when she appeared in the 1998 filmSandman,directed by Lively's father. She describes her role as a "bit part".[11]She was initially not interested in acting and wanted to attendStanford University.[6]

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantswas released in 2005. Lively's performance earned her a nomination for aTeen Choice Awardfor "Choice Movie Breakout – Female".[15]In 2006, Lively co-starred withJustin LonginAccepted,and she had minor roles in the horror film,Simon Says.Acceptedwas not well received by critics, but Lively's performance was, earning her a 'Breakthrough Award' fromHollywood Life.[16]Lively starred inElvis and Anabelle(2007) as Anabelle, abulimicgirl who hoped to win a beauty pageant.[17]She saidof getting into character for the rolethat she had "shed serious weight" for her height. In a 2012 conversation withAllure,Lively said that shedoes not drinkand has never tried drugs.[95]
Controversies
Following the civil rights protests in 2020, Lively's husband Reynolds publicly apologized and expressed regret for their usage of theBoone Hall Plantationdue to its association withslavery,stating: "What we saw at the time was a wedding venue onPinterest.What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy. Years ago we got married again at home—but shame works in weird ways. A giant fucking mistake like that can either cause you to shut down or it can reframe things and move you into action...Re-patterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”[96][97]
After Catherine, Princess of Wales, revealed her cancer diagnosis, Lively apologized for her beverage line's advertisement that mimicked the princess's since-deleted family picture. On March 22, 2024, Lively stated via Instagram Stories: "I made a silly post around the 'Photoshop fails' frenzy, and oh man, that post has me mortified today. I'm sorry. Sending love and well wishes to all, always."[98]
On August 10, 2024, journalistKjersti Flaareuploaded a 2016 interview she had with guests Lively and herCafé Societyco-starParker Posey,calling it the "most uncomfortable interview situation [she] has ever experienced."[99][100]About two weeks later, a clip from an episode of the Zoe Ball and Friends podcast resurfaced in which Lively admitted to giving her son Olin a cake that resembled a pair of breasts for his first birthday.[101]Lively became the subject of widespread online backlash.
Advocacy
During the2008 United States presidential election,Lively expressed her support forBarack Obama.Lively andPenn Badgleyappeared in a pro-Obama commercial, as part ofMoveOn.org's Youth Vote program.
