The nameCaerlaverockis ofBrittonicorigin.[1]The first part of the name is the elementcajrmeaning "an enclosed, defensible site", (Welshcaer,"fort, city" ).[1]The second part of the name may be the personal nameLïμarch(WelshLlywarch),[1]or a loststream-nameformed from the adjectivelaβar,"talkative" (Welshllafar,seeAfon Llafar),[1]suffixed with–ǭg,"having the quality of",[1]or the adjectival suffix-īg.[1]The present form has been influenced by theScotswordlaverock,"skylark".[1]
