Coleorton(/kəˈlɔːrtən/kə-LOR-tən) is a village andcivil parishinNorth West Leicestershire,England.It is situated on theA512 roadapproximately 2 miles (3.2 km) east ofAshby de la Zouch.Nearby villages includeNewbold,to the north,Thringstoneto the east, andSwanningtonto the south-east.

In the2001 census,the population of the parish was 1,016,[1]increasing to 1,177 at the 2011 census.[2]
The village's name means 'farm/settlement on a ridge'. 'Cole' derives from theOld Englishcolmeaningcoal,which was first appended here in 1443[3]
Formerly an ancient parish inWest Goscotehundred, Coleorton became part ofAshby de la Zouch Rural Districtwhich was created in 1894.[4]
Coal miningwas an important industry in the area since the 15th century.[5]In 1572, the miners worked in gangs of 10-20 men, with the gang paid one shilling for each 'rook' they dug out (the rook was a fixed quantity, believed to be c. 1-2 tons).[6]ColeortonColliery,which was between Coleorton and Swannington, is now closed, and a woodlandColeorton Woodwas planted in 1991–2 on the colliery site as part of theNational Forest.[7]Opencast miningoperated between 1985 and 1995.[5]
Coleorton was the birthplace ofWilliam Stenson(1771–1861), founder ofWhitwickColliery and 'Father ofCoalville'
TheGrade II* listedColeorton Hall,in the west of the parish, was built in 1804-8 for the art patronSir George Beaumont.William Wordsworth was a regular and frequent guest of Sir George Beaumont at the Hall. Between 1948 and 1997 the house was owned by theNational Coal Boardand used as offices, and it has now been converted into apartments.[8][9]
Coleorton has a post office and is served by three public bus services.

editFarm Town is a village that is part of thecivil parishof Coleorton.[10]It is located (52°44′44″N01°25′25″W/ 52.74556°N 1.42361°W) due east of the town ofAshby-de-la-Zouch.
