Career

A collector of comics and publisher of mini-comics since childhood, Miller began as editor of the trade magazineComics Retailerin 1993. Following the introduction ofMagic: The Gathering,he added games to its coverage, changing the title toComics & Games Retailerin 2001. In 1998, Miller was appointed managing editor ofComics Buyer's Guide.[3]

His first professional comics work appeared in 2003 inCrimson DynamoforMarvel Comics,which led to a run onIron Man(#73/418 – 85/430). He writes a regular column calledLongbox Manifestofor regular comics magazineComics Buyer's Guide.In 2007, he launchedComichron,[4]a website devoted to comic-book circulation history and research. Miller was hired as a writer for the video gameSword of the New World.[5]In early 2008, he launched a fantasywebcomicwith artist Chuck Fiala calledSword & Sarcasm.[6]

In 2008, he wrote theDark Horsecomic-book adaptation ofIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.[7]In 2009, he was announced as the scripter forMass Effect: Redemption,the first comic-book series based on the video gameMass Effect,launching in January 2010.[8]

In 2013 he wrote his first novel in a non-licensed universe,Overdraft: The Orion Offensive,for 47North. The work was originally released over several weeks as a Kindle Serial.[9]

On April 11, 2024, it was announced exclusively by the web siteGizmodothat a new novel,Batman: Resurrection,set in theTim BurtonBatmanuniversewould be written by Miller. The book is set in between the events of the 1989 film and its sequel,Batman Returns(1992). The book was released October 15, 2024.[10]

On September 23, 2024, During an interview on the Epic Realms Podcast Miller spoke about how he had gotten the go ahead to write theBatman: Resurrectionnovel from having seen the Burton movie multiple times in the theater upon its release.[11]In October 2024 it was revealed thatBatman: Resurrectionwould be the first of a duology of novels; a sequel, titledBatman: Revolution,was later revealed by Miller and is scheduled for release in fall 2025.[12][13]

In 2005, Miller wrote a one-shot issue ofStar Wars: EmpireforDark Horse Comics,featuringDarth Vaderas the main character. Next year, as part of Dark Horse relaunching theirStar Warscomic line, Miller started writing the ongoingStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republiccomic series, a spin-off prequel of thevideo game of the same name.The series proved a major success among fans and lasted for 50 issues, before coming to a conclusion in 2010. In August 2008,Wizards of the Coastreleased aKnights of the Old Republicguidebook for itsStar Wars Roleplaying Game,which Miller co-wrote.[14]

In 2010 Miller began writing theStar Wars: Knight Errantcomic series. Following Dark Horse changing the format of their series, it is not ongoing, but instead published as independent story arcs, separated from each other by several months. AKnight Errantnovel was released in early 2011 byDel Rey,taking place between the first and second arcs of the comic series – this was Miller's first professional novel.[15]

In October 2012, Del Rey announced that Miller would writeStar Wars: Kenobi,a novel aboutObi-Wan Kenobi's life on Tatooine.[16]The book was released on August 27, 2013 in hardcover, and debuted at #12 on theNew York Timeshardcover bestseller list.[17]Miller subsequently wroteStar Wars: A New Dawn,which was published in 2014, a prequel to the animated television seriesStar Wars Rebels,[18]which premiered onDisney XDin fall the same year. It was the first novel of thenew canonthat replaced what is now known asStar Wars Legends.Miller also wrote the short story "The Ride", part of the short story collectionCanto Bightthat was released in December 2017 as part of a marketing program for the movieStar Wars: The Last Jedi.[19]In September 2023, Del Rey revealed that Miller would writeStar Wars: The Living Force,a novel focusing on the Jedi Council in the year beforeStar Wars: The Phantom Menace.The book was released on April 9, 2024.[20]
