Naval career
editGamble joined theRoyal Navyin 1870.[1]After serving in the Naval Intelligence Department at theAdmiraltyfrom 1893, he became commanding officer of the protected cruiserHMSHyacinthin 1902, commanding officer of the armoured cruiserHMSKentin 1903 and commanding officer of thebattleshipHMSCanopusin 1905 before becoming commanding officer of the torpedo schoolHMSVernonin 1907.[2]
Gamble became Naval Advisor to theTurkish Governmentin 1909 and Commander of the 6th Cruiser Squadron in 1910.[1]The Census 1911 shows him onHMSBacchantewith his Flag CaptainReginald Tyrwhittand Flag LieutenantBertram Ramsay.[3]He then served inWorld War Ias Commander of the4th Battle Squadronwith his flag in the battleshipHMSBenbowfrom 1914[4]before joining the Naval War Staff at the Admiralty in 1915 and retiring in 1917.[1]
