Eloise(originally titledEloise: A Book for Precocious Grown-ups) is the first of theEloisebook series written and drawn byKay ThompsonandHilary Knight,respectively. It was published in 1955.[3]In 1969, the adult-oriented book was re-released as achildren's book,without change.[1]Anaudiobookversion ofEloise,narrated byBernadette Peters,was released in October 2015 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the series.[2]The title character was inspired by an alter ego of Thompson, a little girl who lives at thePlaza Hotelin New York City.[4]

In 1956, the book was adapted into a 90-minutetelevision play,Eloise,broadcast on theCBStelevision showPlayhouse 90.

On April 23, 2003,Eloisewas adapted into alive-action made-for-TV film,titledEloise at the Plaza,produced byDiNovi PicturesandHandmade FilmsforWalt Disney Televisionwith distribution handled byABC Television Network.It was released on bothVHSandDVDin the same year byBuena Vista Home Entertainment.After the release of the first movie,Eloise at Christmastimewas released on November 22, 2003 onVHSandDVDin the same year.
