Syed Emraan Anwar Hashmi(pronounced[ɪmˈɾaːnˈɦaːʃmi];born 24 March 1979) is an Indian actor who works inHindi cinema.Born into theBhatt family,he began his career an assistant director on thehorrorfilmRaaz(2002).[1]He made his acting debut with the crime filmFootpath(2003), and achieved his breakthrough for his starring role in the erotic thrillerMurder(2004).[2][3]

Hashmi went on to star in thrillers such asZeher(2005),Kalyug(2005),Aksar(2006), andGangster: A Love Story(2006). His other critically or commercially successful films includeJannat(2008),Raaz: The Mystery Continues(2009),Murder 2(2011),The Dirty Picture(2011),Jannat 2(2012) andRaaz 3: The Third Dimension(2012). He earned nominations for theFilmfare Award for Best Supporting ActorforOnce Upon a Time in Mumbaai(2010) andShanghai(2012).[4][5][6]

This was followed by a series of poorly received films and a hiatus. He returned with the commercially successful action thrillerTiger 3(2023), which earned him his third Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Early life

Hashmi was born on 24 March 1979, inMumbai,Maharashtra.[7]His father, Syed Anwar Hashmi, is a businessman, who also acted in the mystery filmBaharon Ki Manzil(1968), and his mother, Maherrah Hashmi, was a homemaker. His paternal grandfather, Syed Shaukat Hashmi, migrated to Pakistan after thepartition of India,where he worked as a journalist and as a film director,[8]while his grandmother, Meherbano Mohammad Ali (known by her screen namePurnima), was an actress, who stayed in India.[9][10]

Meherbano Mohammad Ali later married producer-directorBhagwan Das Varma,making him Hashmi's step-grandfather and Hashmi a part of the Varma family.[11]Hashmi is also a part of the Bhatt family as Meherbano was the sister of Shirin Mohammad Ali, the mother of producersMahesh BhattandMukesh Bhatt,who are thus Hashmi's uncles.[12]Hashmi is the second cousin of directorMohit Suri,with whom he has collaborated in several films, actressesPooja BhattandAlia Bhattand actorRahul Bhatt.Udita Goswamiis his sister-in-law. Hashmi studied at the Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School. Later, he attendedSydenham Collegein Mumbai and earned a bachelor's degree from theUniversity of Mumbai.

2003–2007: Breakthrough with erotic-thrillers

Hashmi made his acting debut withVikram Bhatt'sthrillerFootpath(2003) alongsideAftab ShivdasaniandBipasha Basu.His performance as Raghu Shrivastav, a gangster, was appreciated by critics, with Gaurav Malani describing him as the "scene-stealer" and praised his mannerisms.[13]It emerged as a commercial failure at the box-office.[14]

He achieved his breakthrough withAnurag Basu'serotic thrillerMurder(2004) co-starringMallika SherawatandAshmit Patelin lead roles.[15]Taran AdarshofBollywood Hungamasaid about his performance: "Hashmi is fantastic in a role that seems tailor-made for him. Portraying an obsessive lover with flourish, there's no denying that the narrative gets a major impetus thanks to Hashmi's performance."[16]Murderemerged as a commercial success, with a domestic total of250 million(US$2.9 million), ranking as theeighth highest-grossing Hindi fim of the year.[17]

Hashmi next starred in Basu's musical romanceTumsa Nahin Dekha(2004) oppositeDia Mirza.While shooting the film, Basu was diagnosed with blood cancer, so producer-directorMahesh Bhattstepped in to complete it.[18]Although the film emerged as a commercial disaster at the box office,[19]Hashmi's portrayal of Daksh Mittal (a young millionaire who falls in love with abargirl,played by Mirza) received mixed-to-positive reviews. A review of his performance inBBC Onlinenoted that he was "becoming fabulous with every film."[20]

The next year Hashmi made appearances in 4 movies. His 1st movie in 2005 wasZeher,a mystery thriller film directed by debutant Mohit Suri & produced by Mahesh Bhatt, adaptation of the 2003 American filmOut Of Time.Released on 25 March 2005, the film was moderately successful at the box office. Film's songs 'Agar Tum Mil Jao' & 'Jaane Jaa Jaane Jaa' were chartbusters while other songs were also extremely popular with the song 'Woh Lahme' being a big rage among the youth. His 2nd film that year wasAashiq Banaya Aapne,a romantic thriller film directed by Aditya Datt, inspired by the 2001 American filmTangled,starring Emraan Hashmi, Sonu Sood, & Tanushree Dutta (in her debut), & follows a love triangle between their characters. His 3rd film that year wasChocolate,a crime thriller film directed by Vivek Agnihotri in his directorial debut, starring Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Emraan Hashmi, Irrfan Khan, Arshad Warsi, Tanushree Dutta, & Sushma Reddy. The film was inspired by the 1995 American filmThe Usual Suspects.His final film appearance that year was a supporting role inMohit Suri's action thrillerKalyug,alongsideKunal Khemu,Smilie Suri,Amrita Singh,Ashutosh Rana&Deepal Shaw.Based on thesex industry,the film depicted the devastating effect that non-consensualpornographic filmshave on the subjects. Hashmi's first screen appearance in 2006 wasAnant Mahadevan'serotic thrillerAksaralongsideUdita GoswamiandDino Morea.The film was super hit, and well received from critics.[24][25]He followed it up with Basu'smusicalromantic thrillerGangster: A Love Storyco-starring debutanteKangana RanautandShiney Ahujain lead roles. The film emerged as a commercial success at the box-office, grossing over190 million(US$2.2 million) in India.[26][27]It opened to positive reviews from critics upon release, with Hashmi's portrayal of Akash Kapadia, anundercoverdetective, receiving particular praise.Rediff's Raja Sen wrote, "Hashmi's character is an understated one, and he manages to keep it that way. There is no unnecessary bluster or melodrama, and he does a pretty believable job. Writing for theHindustan Times,criticKhalid Mohameddescribed it as "intense and believable".[34]Subhash K Jha wrote: "...Hashmi [is] an actor who conceals more than he reveals on screen. There is an inherent pain in his personality that this film taps better than anything he has done earlier. Hashmi's only film appearance in 2008 wasKunal Deshmukh's crime romanceJannat.Depicting a love story set against the backdrop ofmatch fi xing,the film also starredSonal Chauhan,Javed SheikhandSameer Kochhar.The film, and Hashmi's performance in the film as Arjun Dixit, abookmaker,received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics; Taran Adarsh commented that "[t]he actor displays the gamut of emotions with aplomb, he changes expressions like a chameleon changes colors.Jannatis yet another turning point in his career. "[39]The film emerged as a commercial success in India, with revenues of over420 million(US$4.8 million).[40]

In 2009, Hashmi appeared in Suri'ssupernatural horror filmRaaz: The Mystery Continues,alongside Ranaut andAdhyayan Suman.Hashmi's portrayal of a painter, and the film, received mixed-to-positive reviews;The Times of India'sNikhat Kazmiwrote: "Hashmi is fast emerging as theColin Farrellof Indian cinema: completely mercurial, eclectic and unpredictable. As the brooding, prescient painter, who paints death on his canvas and falls in love with one of subjects, he is suitably aggrieved, desperate and afraid. The following year, Hashmi featured inMilan Luthria's period action dramaOnce Upon a Time in Mumbaaiwith anensemble castincludingAjay Devgan,Kangana Ranaut,Prachi DesaiandRandeep Hooda.The film, which depicted the rise oforganised crime in Mumbai,saw Hashmi play Shoaib Khan, a character inspired by real-life gangsterDawood Ibrahim.[44]With a domestic revenue of over780 million(US$8.9 million),Once Upon A Time in Mumbaaiemerged as a commercial success at the box-office, ranking as theseventh highest-grossing Hindi film of the year.The film received positive reviews from critics upon release, with particular praise for Hashmi's performance.[45][46]Blessy Chettiar ofDaily News and Analysisdescribed him as "top class", whileKomal Nahtaremarked: "This is easily Hashmi's best performance so far. Hashmi began 2011 withMadhur Bhandarkar'sromantic comedyDil Toh Baccha Hai Jialongside Devgn,Omi Vaidya,Shazahn Padamsee,Tisca ChopraandShruti Hassan.The film, and Hashmi's performance, received mixed reviews from critics upon release, and emerged as a commercial failure at the box-office.[54][55][56][57]He next featured in Suri's psychological action thrillerMurder 2,alongsideJacqueline Fernandez.The film, and Hashmi's performance, received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics.[58]Shubhra Gupta ofThe Indian Expresswrote: "Hashmi gets to do what he does best, glowering at the men, bedding the ladies, and towards the end, going head to head with the bad guy [...] he goes through the film with his usual smart one-liners containing equal amounts of bluster and fluster."[59]Murder 2emerged as a commercial success at the box-office, with a domestic revenue of over476 million(US$5.4 million).[60][61]His final film appearance that year was Luthria's biographical musical dramaThe Dirty Picture,featuringVidya Balanas the controversial Indian actressSilk Smitha,alongsideNaseeruddin ShahandTusshar Kapoor.He portrayed Abraham, the narrator, who proclaims himself to be the protagonist's biggest enemy. The film opened to widespread critical acclaim, with praise for Hashmi's performance;[62]CNN-IBN'sRajeev Masandwrote: "Hashmi is highly restrained as Abraham, a director who believes in film as art, and who abhors the idea of inserting steamy numbers in his movie to lure in the crowds."[63]However, several critics were sceptical about his role in the film;[63]Soumyadipta Banerjee fromDaily News and Analysisconsidered it "out of place".[64]It emerged as a major commercial success with a worldwide revenue of over1.14 billion(US$13 million).Murder 2andThe Dirty Pictureranked as theninthand seventh highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.[65]

In 2012, Hashmi appeared in Deshmukh's crime thrillerJannat 2alongside Hooda andEsha Gupta.It was initially titledInformer,but was later changed to the current title, making it a follow-up film toJannat(2008).[66]The film received mixed reviews from critics upon release, but emerged as a commercial success at the box-office.[67][68]He next starred alongsideAbhay Deol,Prosenjit ChatterjeeandKalki KoechlininDibakar Banerjee's political thrillerShanghai,an adaptation of writerVassilis Vassilikos's novelZand the 1969French film of the same name.[69]Set in a fictional town called Bharat Nagar, it traced corruption in India. The film opened to critical acclaim upon release, and Hashmi received widespread praise for his portrayal of Joginder Parmar, avideographerwho sometimes shoots porn films.[70][71]Madhureeta Mukherjee ofThe Times of Indiawrote that Hashmi "looks the part and pulls off an act he should be proud of."[72]Raja Sen described it as one of his best performances and wrote: "Hashmi delivers a knockout punch as he masters a complicated role"[73]and called it as "the year's finest, bravest and most consistent performance."[74][75]Hashmi's next appearance that year was for Vikram Bhatt's supernatural horror filmRaaz 3: The Third Dimension,collaborating again with Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta. 2013–present: Diversification and setbacks

In 2013, Hashmi's first film appearance was inEkta KapoorandVishal Bhardwaj's supernatural thrillerEk Thi Daayan,alongsideKonkona Sen Sharma,Huma Qureshiand Koechlin in lead roles.[82]The film, and Hashmi's performance, opened to positive reviews from critics upon release.[83]Saibal Chatterjee ofNDTVmentioned that Hashmi "gives the character of the haunted magician just that – a haunted feel that is just apt", whilst Shubhra Gupta called his performance "consistent", adding that he "is a performer who keeps getting better".[84][85]Hashmi's second appearance that year was forRaj Kumar Gupta's comedy thrillerGhanchakkaropposite Balan. The film, and Hashmi's performance, opened to mixed-to-negative reviews from critics upon release.[86]Sneha May Francis ofEmirates 24/7wrote that "Hashmi spins one of his acting career's most understated, yet imposing performances. He crafts [his character's] predicaments – his anger, frustration and suspicions – with effortless charm."[87]Rajeev Masand was more critical of his performance, reflecting that he "struggles to shine under the limited scope of his role."[88]On the commercial front,Ek Thi Daayanemerged as a below-average grosser, whileGhanchakkaremerged as a commercial disaster.[89][90][91][92]

In 2014, Hashmi starred in Deshmukh's crime thrillerRaja NatwarlalandRensil D'Silva's crime drama thrillerUngli,both of which emerged as critical and commercial failures at the box-office, with the latter being Hashmi's fifth consecutive commercial failure.[93]He then played the leading role inAcademy Award-winning directorDanis Tanović's dramaTigers,which premiered at2014 Toronto International Film Festivaland was later released digitally on the on-demand platformZEE5in November 2018.[94][95][96]

In 2015, Hashmi appeared in two films, the first being the science fiction action filmMr. XalongsideAmyra Dastur,which emerged as a critical and commercial disaster at the box-office.[97][98]His second film that year was the long-awaited musical romantic dramaHamari Adhuri Kahani,opposite Balan for the third time, alongsideRajkummar Rao.The film was based on the love story of Bhatt's parents,Nanabhai Bhatt,Shirin Mohammad Ali and his stepmother Hemlata Bhatt. It opened to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics upon release, but emerged as a moderate commercial success at the box-office.[99][100]The same year, he appeared alongside Gupta in the music video of the romantic song "Main Rahoon Ya Naa Rahoon" composed byArmaan MalikandAmaal Malik,and presented byT-Series.

Hashmi in 2019

The following year, he starred in the biographical dramaAzhar(2016), based on the life of Indian cricketer and former national team captainMohammad Azharuddin.The film opened to mixed-to-negative reviews from critics upon release, and emerged as a commercial failure at the box-office.[101]He next appeared in Vikram Bhatt'sRaaz: Reboot(2016), the fourth film in theRaazfilm series. It emerged as a critical and commercial disaster at the box-office.[102][103]

Hashmi's spate of commercial failures continued in 2017 with Luthria's action adventureBaadshahoco-starring alongside Devgan,Ileana D'Cruz,Gupta andVidyut Jammwal,another critical and commercial disaster.[104][105]The same year, he also began shooting forCaptain Nawab,but the film was later shelved.[106][107]

After a special appearance as himself in the comedyWelcome to New York(2018), Hashmi made hisOTTdebut with the spy thriller web seriesBard of Blood,which was based on thenovel of the same nameby Bilal Siddiqui. Produced byShah Rukh Khanand released onNetflix,it opened to mixed reviews from critics.

In 2019, he appeared in the crime dramaWhy Cheat Indiaand the mystery thrillerThe Body,the latter co-starringRishi Kapoorin his final film appearance, with both films again emerging as critical and commercial disasters. The same was the fate of his 2021 releases – the crime action filmMumbai Saga,the mystery thrillerChehre(co-starringAmitabh Bachchan) and the supernatural horror filmDybbuk.[108][109][110][111]The same year, Hashmi also featured in the music video of the romantic song "Lut Gaye", presented byT-Series,directed byRadhika Raoand Vinay Sapru, and sung byJubin Nautiyal.[112]

In 2022, Hashmi again featured in the music video "Ishq Nahi Karte" sung byB PraakandJaani.[113]After no film releases in 2022, he returned to screen in 2023 with the action comedy-dramaSelfiee,co-starringAkshay Kumar.[114]A remake of the 2019 Malayalam-language filmDriving Licence,the film emerged as a critical and commercial disaster.[115]

Hashmi had a career resurgence when he starred as Aatish Rehman, the antagonist inManeesh Sharma's action thrillerTiger 3,co-starringSalman KhanandKatrina Kaif.The film is a part of theYRF Spy Universe.[116][117]The film opened to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics upon release, with particular praise for Hashmi's performance. It emerged as a major commercial success at the box-office, grossing466.63 crore(US$53 million) worldwide,[118]ranking as thesixth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year,theninth highest-grossing Indian film of the yearand the26th highest-grossing Indian film of all time.His performance in the film earned him his third nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Personal life

Hashmi married Parveen Shahani in anIslamic wedding ceremonyin December 2006 after a six and a half-year relationship. The couple have a son, Ayaan Hashmi, who was born on 3 February 2010.[119][120][121][122]On 15 January 2014, Ayaan was diagnosed with first-stage cancer.[123]Five years later, in January 2019, Ayaan Hashmi was declared cancer free.[124]

While Hashmi's father is Muslim and his mother was Christian, Hashmi was brought up as a Muslim and says he is a "firm believer in God".[119][120][125]His mother, Maherrah Hashmi, died on 11 March 2016, Hashmi cancelled one day shoot of his filmAzhar,when he got to know about his mother's demise.[126]He did not want to delay the shoot ofAzharany further and also wanted to occupy his mind with work. So, he returned to the sets the soonest he could.[125]In 2016, Hashmi launched the auto-biographical book called "The Kiss of Life", which was based on his son's journey against cancer. Its foreword was written byAkshay Kumar,with whom he would star seven years later inSelfiee.
