Fujieda(Đằng chi thị,Fujieda-shi)is acitylocated inShizuoka Prefecture,Japan.As of 30 April 2019,the city has an estimatedpopulationof 145,032 in 59,480 households,[1]and apopulation densityof 750 persons per km2.The total area of the city was 194.06 square kilometres (74.93 sq mi). Fujieda is a member of theWorld Health Organization’sAlliance for Healthy Cities(AFHC).[2]

Fujieda is located in the Shida Plateau in central Shizuoka Prefecture between theAbe Riverand theŌi River.The area enjoys a warmmaritime climatewith hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters.

Climate

The city has a climate characterized by characterized by hot and humid summers, and relatively mild winters (Köppen climate classificationCfa). The average annual temperature in Fujieda is 15.9 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2159 mm with September as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 26.8 °C, and lowest in January, at around 5.7 °C.[4]

History

Under theTokugawa shogunateofEdo periodJapan, much of the area of present-day Fujieda was part ofTanaka Domain,and itscastleformed part of the eastern outlying fortifications ofSunpu.The town also developed asFujieda-juku,apost townon theTōkaidōhighway connectingEdowithKyoto.

During the cadastral reform of the earlyMeiji periodin 1889, Fujieda-juku became Fujieda Town withinShida DistrictShizuoka Prefecture.Fujieda Stationon theTōkaidō Main Linerailway opened on April 16, 1889, leading to development of the surrounding area. On March 31, 1954, Fujieda merged with neighboring Aoshima Town and four neighboring villages to form Fujieda City. Setoya Village merged on February 15, 1955 and Hirohata Village on April 1, 1957.

On January 1, 2009, the neighboring town ofOkabe(fromShida District) was merged into Fujieda. Shida District was dissolved as a result of this merger.[5]

Fujieda has amayor-councilform of government with a directly elected mayor and aunicameralcity legislature of 22 members.

Economy

Fujieda is primarily abedroom communityfor nearbyShizuoka.The local economy is dominated by agriculture (tea, strawberry, rice,shiitake) and light manufacturing, including pharmaceuticals, beverages, and food processing.

Education

Fujieda has 17 public elementary schools and ten public junior high schools operated by the city government. and three public high schools operated by the Shizuoka Prefectural Board of Education. There are also two private middle schools and three private high schools. The prefectural also operates one special education school for disabled children. In addition,Shizuoka Sangyo Universityhas a campus in Fujieda, and the agricultural fields forShizuoka Universityare also located in the city.

Fujieda is represented in theJ. Leagueoffootballby its local clubFujieda MYFC,currently competing inJ2 League,the second tier of Japanese professional football. In the 1980s and 1990s the city was represented in theJapan Soccer Leagueandformer Japan Football Leagueby local clubsFujieda City Hall SC,which still competes in the prefectural divisions, and Chuo Bohan SC/Fujieda Blux, which moved out of town in 1994 to becomeAvispa Fukuoka.

The city also home of Fujieda Higashi High School, four-time winners ofAll Japan High School Soccer Tournament.Notable alumnus includingMakoto HasebeandMasashi Nakayama.
