The ranch is on land that was part of theRancho San Franciscoland grant. Its name honors the first discovery of gold in California at the site by Francisco Lopez, years beforethe discovery that precipitatedtheCalifornia Gold Rush.[1]The ranch has aheliport,grassy meadows,twocreeks,awaterfall,and variousWesternsets.[2]

Walt Disney Productionsfirst leased the land for theMickey Mouse Club"Adventures of Spin & Marty" segments in the1950s.[3]The company bought the 315-acre (127 ha) ranch in 1959 for $300,000 (~$2.4 million in 2023).[2][4]Subsequent purchases of adjacent land increased the area of the ranch to 890 acres (360 ha).[4]

Abusiness districtset andresidential streetset were built on the ranch by 2012. The district set has 42 stores, while the residential set has 23 houses all with separate architectural style.[5]

In May 2013, Disney announced plans to redevelop 58 acres (23 ha) of the property into a new film and television production studio, consisting of six newsound stagesand production offices.[6][7]The site will be called Disney |ABC Studiosat The Ranch.[8]

The project was approved byLos Angeles Countyin August 2013.[3][9]

In October 2017, a second extension for the new studio's construction permit was granted, extending the permit to January 2019.[4]

The ranch was used to film the episodes ofSpin and Marty,a popular segment ofThe Mickey Mouse Cluband parts ofZorro.The first movie shot at the ranch wasToby Tyler.Most of the exterior scenes inOld Yellerwere filmed here. The Bolton Estate scenes and several others from Disney'sThe Horse in the Gray Flannel Suitwas shot here. The town featured inRoots: The Next Generationswas also built on the Golden Oak Ranch. The ranch has also been used for filmingColonel Sanderscommercials forKentucky Fried Chicken,[13]and themusic videoforJordin Sparks' song,Battlefield.[14]A covered bridge spans the man-made stream featured inFollow Me, Boys!,episodes ofBonanza,The Greatest American Hero,various episode of multipleStar Trekseries and was used for parts of the music video ofAmaranthbyNightwish.The exterior house featured in the original 1961 filmThe Parent Trapwas also shot on the ranch, as was the Peabody farm from theUniversalfilmBack to the Future.It was also used for the filming of three of the five Herbie films, including two scenes at the lake inThe Love BugandHerbie Goes to Monte Carlo,along withAlonzo Hawk'sdream sequenceinHerbie Rides Again.In 1985,Big Top Pee-weewas filmed here and part ofShort Circuitwas filmed here as well. According toPhil Abraham,parts of "The Hobo Code" (a first-season episode ofMad Men) were filmed here (specifically, the scenes ofDon Draper's childhood).[15]The rural farmhouse set on the ranch (known as "Olivia's House" ) played the part of Margaret Sterling's hippie commune in the fourth episode of Season 7 ofMad Men.[16]It is also the setting ofDwight Schrute's farm on several episodes ofThe Office,and has also been used for the exterior downtown scenes ofWandaVision.[17]The official video ofEd Sheeran's songOverpass Graffitiwas filmed there. The music video forHelloGoodbye's song "Here (In Your Arms)"was also filmed there.
