Hardgate has probably been settled sinceneolithictimes with a burial site at Knappers Farm, theCochno Stone(acup and ring markedstone), and aburial chambernearCochno Lochproviding evidence of this.[1]
Although it is a far older settlement, it is administratively part of nearbyClydebankalong with the neighbouring village ofDuntocherand now lies in theWest Dunbartonshirelocal authority area. Along with Duntocher andFaifley,Hardgate falls within West Dunbartonshiire'sKilpatrickward with a combined population of 12,719 in 2011.[2]
Dunn's Mills operated a cotton mill in the 19th century. It continued to produce thread and yarn until its destruction during theClydebank Blitzin 1941.[3]
The village expanded due to house building by theClydebanktown council afterWorld War II,and later by theWimpeyfirm in the early 1970s on what had beengreen beltland.
The village has onenon-denominationalschool, Goldenhill Primary School.
