Harlemis a city inColumbia County,Georgia,United States. It is part of theAugusta metropolitan area.The population was 2,666 at the2010 census,[4]up from 1,814 in 2000. This city was named after the neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan.[5]Harlem is the birthplace of comedianOliver Hardy;the annual Harlem Oliver Hardy Festival is held on the first Saturday each October on Main Street in his honor.

History
editFrom the building of theGeorgia Railroadwhich passes through town until at least the 1860s, Harlem was known asSaw Dust. The town is twinned withUlverstonin England, the birthplace ofStan Laurel, comedy partner of Oliver Hardy.
Geography
editHarlem is located in southern Columbia County at33°25′1″N82°18′50″W/ 33.41694°N 82.31389°W(33.416822, -82.313762),[6]with its western boundary following theMcDuffie Countyline. U.S. Routes78and278pass through the center of town, leading east 23 miles (37 km) to downtownAugustaand west 12 miles (19 km) toThomson.U.S. Route 221crosses US 78/278 in the center of town, leading north 5 miles (8 km) toInterstate 20and 21 miles (34 km) to theSouth Carolinaborder, and south 16 miles (26 km) toWrens.
According to theUnited States Census Bureau,Harlem has a total area of 4.5 square miles (11.7 km2), of which 0.02 square miles (0.04 km2), or 0.36%, is water.[4]
