Henry Dudley Ryder(21 July 1777 – 31 March 1836[1]) was a prominent Englishevangelical Anglicanbishop in the early years of the nineteenth century, most notably asBishop of Lichfield.He was the first evangelical to be raised to theAnglicanepiscopate.[2]

Life
editRyder was the fifth son ofNathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby,by his wife Elizabeth Terrick, daughter ofRichard Terrick,Bishop of London.Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowbyand the HonourableRichard Ryderwere his elder brothers. He studied atSt John's College, Cambridge,[3]and became vicar ofLutterworthand ofClaybrook.He wascanon of Windsorin 1808.
He was successivelyBishop of Gloucester,from 1815, andBishop of Lichfield and Coventry,from 1824. His kneeling statue byFrancis Legatt Chantreyis inLichfield Cathedral.
John Henry Newman,in hisApologia Pro Vita Sua,speaks of the veneration in which he held Ryder.[4][5]
Family
editRyder married Sophia, daughter of Thomas March Phillips, in 1802. Their second son George Dudley Ryder was the father of the Very ReverendHenry Ignatius Dudley Ryder.Their fifth son wasAdmiral of the FleetSir Alfred Phillips Ryder.Their sixth and youngest son Spencer Ryder was the ancestor of the sailor and politicianRobert Ryder.Ryder died in March 1836, aged 58. His wife died in August 1862.
