Hildegard Zadek(15 December 1917 – 21 February 2019)[2]was a German operaticsoprano.She wasKammersängerinat theVienna State Operaand performed internationally.

Early life
editZadek, the oldest of three daughters of Elizabeth (Freundlich) and Alex Zadek, was born inBromberg,Province of Posen,on 15 December 1917.[3]After her hometown becamePolishafter World War I, her parents moved toStettinin 1920,[4]where Zadek spent her youth.
However, as a Jew she was forced to leave Germany in 1934 and settled in thenPalestine,where she worked as a nurse and shoe saleswoman inJerusalem,while studying voice withRose Pauly.In 1945, she returned to Europe and studied at theZurich ConservatorywithRia Ginster.[5]
Life and career
editShe made her operatic debut on 3 February 1947 at theVienna State Operain the title role of Verdi'sAidato great acclaim; she remained with this theatre until 1971.[6]The following year she first appeared at theSalzburg Festival,where she appeared as Donna Anna in Mozart'sDon Giovanni,as Vittelia in hisLa clemenza di Tito,and in the title role ofAriadne auf Naxosby Richard Strauss. Her repertory also included Elsa in Wagner'sLohengrin,Eva in hisDie Meistersinger von Nürnberg,and the title roles of Gluck'sIphigénie en Taurideand Puccini'sTosca.[5]
Zadek took part in the world premiere ofCarl Orff'sAntigonaein 1949, and sang Magda Sorel in the local premiere in Vienna of Menotti'sThe Consulin 1950. She also appeared at theMunich State Operaand theBerlin State Opera.[7]She made guest appearances at theRoyal Opera Housein London (from 1950 to 1953; the title roles ofAidaandTosca,Lisa inThe Queen of Spades,Leonora inIl Trovatore,Contessa Almaviva inLe Nozze di Figaro), theGlyndebourne Festivaland theHolland Festival,at theParis Opéra,La Monnaiein Brussels,La Scalain Milan, and theMaggio Musicale Fiorentino,theBolshoi Theatrein Moscow, etc.[7]
Zadek made her debut at theMetropolitan Operain New York as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni on 26 November 1952. Beside Donna Anna (4 performances), at the Met she sang Eva inDie Meistersinger von Nürnberg(2 performances), Elsa inLohengrin(1 performance), and the title role ofAida(1 performance on 14 January 1953, her last at the Met). She also appeared at theSan Francisco Operaand theTeatro Colónin Buenos Aires. Beginning in 1967, she taught at theVienna Music Academy,and gave masterclasses. Her last performance at theVienna State Operawas as Gerhilde inDie Walküreon 3 January 1971, and the same year she retired from the stage.[8]
She left a notable recording of Donna Anna in a completeDon Giovanni,with conductorRudolf Moralt,oppositeGeorge London,Léopold SimoneauandSena Jurinac.Sheturned 100on 15 December 2017.[9]
Zadek died inKarlsruheon 21 February 2019 at the age of 101.[10]
For the promotion of young musicians, the Hildegard Zadek Foundation has held the biennial International Hilde Zadek Voice Competition since 2003.[11]Through her father, Zadek was a cousin of noted art collectorHeinz Berggruen.[12]
