TheHonda clan(Japanese:Bổn nhiều thị,Hepburn:Honda-shiorHonda-uji)is a Japanese family that claims descent from the medieval court nobleFujiwara no Kanemichi.[1]The family settled inMikawaand served theMatsudaira clanas retainers. Later, when the main Matsudaira family became theTokugawa clan,the Honda rose in prestige. The clan includes thirteen branches who haddaimyōstatus, and forty-five who hadhatamotostatus. Arguably the most famous member of the Honda clan was the 16th century samurai generalHonda ShigetsuguandHonda Tadakatsu.Two of the major branches of the clan claim descent from Tadakatsu, or his close relativeHonda Masanobu.

editThe Honda clan descended from theFujiwara clanthroughFujiwara no Kanemichi.[1]The clan was founded by Kanemichi's son, Akimitsu's 11th generation descendant,Honda Sukehide.Sukehide lived inBungo Province(present-dayŌita Prefecture), Honda, and took the family name from his place of residence.[2]

editHonda Sukehide's sonSukesadabecame a retainer toshogunAshikaga Takauji.For his service to theAshikaga shogunate,Sukesada was rewarded territory in theOwari Province.[2]
Honda Yasutoshi's second son,Tadasuke,became ahatamoto.During the time ofHonda Tadahiro,duringBakumatsu,the clan was listed as adaimyoand established a 10,000kokudomain, theNishibata Domain,in Mikawa Province.[3]On July 8, 1884, Honda Tadayuki was appointedViscount.[4]
