On 16 June 2020, German clubBorussia Dortmundstruck a partnership deal with the club for grassroots development. Hyderabad play their home matches at theG.M.C Balayogi Athletic Stadiumin the Hyderabad suburb ofGachibowli.The stadium has a capacity of about 30,000 for matches.

Hyderabad played their inaugural match on 25 October 2019, suffering a 0–5 defeat toATK.The club completed their first season in the Indian Super League in 10th place, failing to qualify for theplayoffs.The club won their first ever championship in the2021–22 ISLby defeatingKerala Blasters3–1 penalties in thefinal.

History

Formation

In February 2019, it was reported thatIndian Super LeaguesidePune Citywere struggling financially and that their owners were looking to sell the club.[5]The club reportedly were behind on paying players and had also attempted to discuss merging with local rivalsMumbai City.[5]After the2018–19season, Pune City released all their players and participated in theSuper Cupusing academy players.[6]

On 26 August 2019, it was reported by theHindustan Timesthat Pune City had disbanded and that formerKerala BlastersCEO Varun Tripuraneni had bought a majority stake in the club.[7]Neither then Pune City CEO Gaurav Modwel or Tripuraneni confirmed the reports. However, the next day, on 27 August 2019, it was announced that Hyderabad would replace Pune City for the2019–20season, with Tripuraneni and businessman Vijay Madduri buying the ownership rights to the team.[8]The club's branding and first kits were then revealed prior to their first season on 29 September 2019.[9]

Inaugural season

On 29 August 2019, it was announced thatPhil Brown,the last head coach ofPune City,would be the first head coach for Hyderabad.[10]In late September, just before the start of the2019–20season, it was revealed that Hyderabad had signed almost every player from Pune City's final squad.[11]

The club played their first ever match on 25 October 2019 againstATKat theSalt Lake Stadium.They were defeated 0–5 in a match which Brown described as "not our usual standards".[12]Hyderabad then succumbed to defeat again in their second match againstJamshedpur.Marcelinhoscored the first goal for the club's history but could not prevent his side's 1–3 defeat.[13]The club finally earned their first victory in their third match on 2 November 2019 against theKerala Blasters.This was also Hyderabad's first home match. Goals fromMarko Stankovićand Marcelinho helped Hyderabad to a 2–1 victory.[14]

On 11 January 2020, with the club in last place in the table, with just one victory and two draws from 12 matches, Brown and the club decided to part ways.[15]FormerIndiainternationalMehrajuddin Wadootook over as caretaker for one match before assistant coachXavier Gurri Lópezbecame interim coach for the rest of the season.[16][17]The club finished their season with a 5–1 victory overNorthEast Unitedon 20 February 2020.[18]Overall, the club finished the season in last place and failed to qualify for theISL playoffs.[19]

2020–21 season

Ahead of the2020–21 Indian Super League season,Hyderabad appointedManolo Márquezas their head coach[20]afterAlbert Rocamutually parted ways with the club when he was approached byFC Barcelonato become their fitness coach.[21]

Hyderabad FC began their second competitive season on 23 November with a win againstOdisha FC.[22]After struggling early in the season, the team made a decent comeback, as they had an unbeaten run which lasted for 12 matches. They managed to get 29 points from 20 games, which includes six wins, three losses and eleven draws. Their last game againstFC Goabecame crucial for them as they needed a win to qualify into the playoffs. After having a goalless draw against Goa, Hyderabad narrowly missed the play-offs as they finished 5th in the league table.[23][24]

2021–22 season

In their third season of theIndian Super League,Hyderabad FC won their maiden title on March 20, 2022 in Margao, Goa. They beatKerala Blasters3-1 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time.

Hyderabad FC goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani saved four penalties in the shootout, including one that was retaken after being saved initially.[25]

2022-23 season

In their fourth season of theIndian Super League,Hyderabad FC finished 2nd in the table to directly qualify for the Semi-Final and avoiding Knockout match.[26]They went on to lose toATK Mohun Baganin a 2 legged semifinal.

2023-24 season

Ahead of the2023–24 Indian Super League season,Hyderabad appointedConor Nestoras their first team coach who will become their head coach once he acquires hisUEFA Pro License,afterManolo Márquezmutually parted ways with the club. Until then,Thangboi Singtowill act as the head coach andShameel Chembakathwill act as his assistant.[27]

The club also confirmed the departures ofOdei Onaindia,Borja Herrera,Akash Mishra,Joel Chianese,Halicharan NarzaryandJavier Siverio.Afterwards,Jonathan Moya,Joe Knowles,Petteri PennanenandFelipe Amorimbecame the high profile incomings.[28]

On 3 May 2023,Mohun Bagan SGwere confirmed2023-24 AFC Cuppreliminary round slot after a 3–1 win via penalties over Hyderabad FC.

In their 3rd ever appearance in theDurand Cupgroup stages, they finished second in group E, behindChennaiyin FC,and aboveDelhi FCandTribhuvan Army.They beat Tribhuvan Army 3-0, lost to Chennaiyin 1-3 and drew with Delhi FC 1-1 in their campaign.[29]They finished 5th out of the six 2nd placed teams and hence, couldn't qualify for theknockout stage.[30]

Crest, colours and kits

The team colours and logo for Hyderabad were unveiled on 21 September 2019.[31]The club colours are yellow and black. According to the club, the logo is titled "Reliving Hyderabad's Football Legacy" and is meant to representHyderabadand the city's heritage.[31]The logo features the minarets from theCharminarin the city andKoh-i-Noordiamonds.[32]According to Hyderabad co-owner Vijay Madduri, the logo "is inspired from the city's history, we now hope that HFC will be a great boost for the sport in the region... we can give a boost to the legacy that is already present in the city's history and roots."[32]

Stadium

Hyderabad play their home matches at theG.M.C Balayogi Athletic Stadium,located in the Hyderabad suburb ofGachibowli.[1]Amulti-purpose stadium,the stadium is mainly used to hostfootballmatches and was built in 2002 prior to the2003 Afro-Asian Games.[41]The stadium used to host matches forFateh Hyderabadin theI-League 2nd Divisionbut the club relocated after saying that the "pitch was not in good shape".[1]Prior to Hyderabad's first season, the grass was relaid and the stadium was renovated and cleaned in anticipation of the2019–20season.[1]

In a very short period of time Hyderabad FC have managed to get local support from the city fans. In their first home match againstKerala Blasters,more than 14,000 people came to support the club which they won by 2-1.Deccan Legionis active fan group of Hyderabad FC.[42]

Ownership

The current co-owners of Hyderabad are Staicu Adrian, Varun Tripuraneni, andRana Daggubati.Madduri, the chief executive officer of theHyderabad-based company Incessant Technologies, said that he was looking forward to his "significant role in developing football in the state, reviving its past glory".[43]Tripuraneni is the former CEO of theKerala Blasters,anotherIndian Super Leagueside. During the club's announcement, Tripuraneni said "It is a proud moment for me, to be co-owner of Hyderabad FC. Hyderabad is a city with great football culture. I look forward to working with key stakeholders and building a strong foundation for the club, which will eventually contribute to society and do the city proud. Our immediate task is to prepare for the new season".[43]

On 24 October 2019, it was announced that prominentTeluguactorRana Daggubatiwould also join Madduri and Tripuraneni as a co-owner of the club.[44]After acquiring ownership, Daggubati stated "Hyderabad has a great legacy with the sport. This team, therefore, is a chance to rekindle that legacy."[44]In 2024BC Jindal Grouptakes over Hyderabad FC, clearing all the financial issues which the club was facing from the start of2023-24 Indian Super League season.

The organizers of ISL introduced eISL, aFIFA video gametournament, for the ISL playing clubs, each represented by two players. Hyderabad FC hosted a series of qualifying games for all the participants wanting to represent the club in eISL. On 20 November the club announced the signing of the two players.[citation needed]
