Jack Barry Ludwig(August 30, 1922 – February 12, 2018)[1]was a Canadian-born American-resident novelist, short story writer, and sportswriter.[2]

Born and raised in theJewish Canadiancommunity ofWinnipeg,Manitoba,[3]Ludwig was educated at theUniversity of Manitoba,graduating with aBachelor of Artsin 1944, and theUniversity of California, Los Angeles,earning his Ph.D. in 1953.[3]He remained a resident of the United States for most of his adult life, holding teaching positions at institutions such as theUniversity of Minnesotaand theState University of New York at Stony Brook.He was a friend and acolyte ofSaul Bellowearly in his career, although this relationship was damaged by hisextramarital affairwith Bellow's then-wife Sondra;[4]He was the basis of the character Valentine Gersbach in Bellow's novelHerzog.[4]

Ludwig's novels includeConfusions(1963),Above Ground(1968), andA Woman of Her Age(1973).Above Ground,a thinly veiled response to his portrayal inHerzog,[4]was later reprinted as part ofMcClelland & Stewart'sNew Canadian Libraryseries. He also published numerous short stories in literary magazines,[5]although he never published a collection of his short stories in book form.

Ludwig was well regarded for his journalism, which concentrated almost exclusively onsportswritingfollowing the publication ofHockey Night in Moscowin 1972,[3]and the subject of a chapter inGraeme Gibson's 1973 non-fiction workEleven Canadian Novelists.
