Early life
editLinden grew up inWinter Park, Florida[1]nearOrlando,where he attendedLake Howell High School.[2][3]He attendedFlorida State University's College of Communication, majoring in marketing and media production.[4]After graduating from college in 2001, he and three friends traveled toHollywood,California with tickets for game showThe Price Is Right.[5]Upon arriving, he was individually called up to compete and won US$5,000 and aTuscan wineserver cart, which he saw as a sign to stay in Hollywood: "I thought, well that's a sign, 'I should stay.' What you want to do, finds you."[6]
Career
editBefore Linden became a screenwriter, he worked atMirage Enterprisesas an assistant to directorsSydney PollackandAnthony Minghella.[7]After reading in a 30th anniversary article inFSView & Florida Flambeau,Florida State's student newspaper, about the 1970Southern Airways Flight 932plane crash that killed most of theMarshall University Thundering Herd football team,[8]Linden says he became "obsessed" with the story.[6]After moving to Hollywood, his first job involved readingfeature filmscreenplays.After being fired from several assistant positions, he decided to write his own screenplay.[5]His first script was titledThings to Do Before I Die,co-written with University of Florida alumnus Cory Helms, andWarner Bros.gave the pair a blind deal to write another script.[5]Linden says the aftermath of the Marshall University tragedy was the very first story he ever thought of.[8]In 2004, he pitched the story to Warner Bros. with film producersBasil Iwanyk[5]andMary Viola.[9]When Warner Bros. bought the script, Linden and other film crew met with many family members of the plane crash victims including Keith Morehouse, whose father was killed in the crash, to collaborate on the honesty of the script and the dignity of the victims.[9]The film becameWe Are Marshall,released in 2006 and directed byMcG(Joseph McGinty Nichol), founder ofWonderland Sound and Vision.[8]
In 2006, it was reported that Linden was writing abiographical filmabout Olympic gold medalist downhill skierBill Johnsonto be produced by Basil Iwanyk, as well as an adaptation ofThe Dogs of Babelto be produced byDavid Heymanand atelevision pilottitledFlash Backto be directed by McG.[5]
Personal life
editIn 2016, Linden started dating Canadian actressRachel McAdams.[10]Their first child, a son, was born in April 2018.[10]In August 2020, it was reported that they were expecting their second child.[11]During an interview in May 2022, McAdams confirmed she had given birth to a daughter.[12]
