Early life

Shetty was born in London on 6 September 1987 to aHindufamily of Indian origin. He was raised inBarnet,North Londonand has a sister.[4][5]From childhood, he was a member of theInternational Society for Krishna Consciousness,known as the Hare Krishna movement or Hare Krishnas.[6]His mother is aGujaratiwho was raised in Yemen and his father is aTuluBuntfrom Mangalore.[7]He attendedQueen Elizabeth's School, Barnet,[8]then went on to graduate from theBayes Business Schoolat theCity St George's, University of London.[9]

Career

In a 2008 interview, Shetty stated that at a 2006 event in France of the Iskcon Pandava Sena (the Hare Krishna youth group) he had undergone a "massive transformation" and become much more appreciative of the Hare Krishna movement.[6]

In business school around 2007 (though Shetty had provided inconsistent accounts of when the event took place),[6]Shetty metGauranga Das,a monk invited to speak at the school onselflessnessand living a minimalist lifestyle.[10]Shetty spoke with Gauranga after his talk and followed him for the remainder of Gauranga'slecture circuitaround the United Kingdom.[5]Shetty says that he spent four summers in India interning at corporations and training with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Shetty has often said that he spent three years, from 2010 to 2013, living the ISKCON lifestyle at an undisclosedashraminMumbai, India,[11][12][13]but his own blog posts and people familiar with his movements in that period indicate he spent most of this time making promotional videos atBhaktivedanta ManorinWatford,[10]with Shetty writing in a blog post that he had arrived in India in October 2010 and had spent less than four months in the country before leaving again.[6]

Shetty began his career atAccenture,working on digital strategy and as a social media coach for the company's executives.[14][15]In 2016, Shetty broke away to become an independent content creator.[6]His work caught the attention ofArianna Huffington,who hired him to produce videos forHuffington Postabout topics such as relationships.[14][16][9][17]Shetty stopped working for theHuffPostin early 2017, later releasing videos independently on Facebook and YouTube. By 2019, Shetty had over 1 million subscribers on YouTube and 20 million followers on Facebook.[6]

Shetty won a 2016 Asian Media Award for Best Blog[18][19]and a 2018Streamy Awardsin the Health and Wellness category.[20]

In 2018, Shetty made appearances onThe Ellen DeGeneres Showand theRed Table Talkshow (hosted byJada Pinkett Smith) on Facebook, and became the "personal spiritual adviser" toWill Smith.[6]

In 2019, Shetty launched the podcastOn Purpose.[21]Thepodcastwas downloaded 64 million times in its first year.[10]On Purposebecame the number one health podcast in the world according toForbes.[22][23]In July 2023, Shetty interviewedUS PresidentJoe Bidenon hismental healthinitiatives in a podcast episode filmed at theWhite House.[24]

In April 2019, Shetty was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Online Award atThe Asian Awardsand in May 2019 he won Best in Health & Wellness at the11th Shorty Awards.[25]

In August 2019, YouTuberNicole Arbourcriticized Shetty for reposting without attribution, leading him to edit 113 posts from hisInstagramand addattributions.[26][27][28]

Shetty is the co-founder of avideo production company,Icon Media, along with Alex Kushneir.[29][14]In 2021, Shetty and his wife Radhi launched Sama Tea, anadaptogenicbrand inspired byayurveda.[30]In 2022, Shetty joined meditation product companyCalmas its "Chief Purpose Officer".[31]

In 2020, Shetty founded the Jay Shetty Certification School, anonline learningplatform for becoming anaccreditedlife coach.It claims to provide aLevel 7 diploma,which is equivalent to aMaster's degreein the United Kingdom.[34]A 2024 investigation into Shetty's career byThe Guardianfound that the school made misleading and erroneous claims of beingOfqual-regulated and inprogression arrangementswith theUniversity of Chichester,as well as several other UK universities. Following the investigation, the website was altered to correct some of these claims. Marketing professor William Keep ofThe College of New Jerseyhas likened the school's business model to amulti-level marketingscheme, as many students are encouraged to recoup the $7,400 tuition cost by starting their own life coach training centers.[6]

Simon & Schusterpublished Shetty's 2020 bookThink Like a Monk.The book offers advice on reducing stress and improving focus, based on Shetty's experiences from living at anashram.[5]The book was a bestseller.[35][36][26]

Simon & Schusterpublished Shetty's second book in 20238 Rules of Love: How to Find It, Keep It, and Let It Go.The book offered advice for people struggled with relationships. The book was published on 31 January 2023, and within a week it became aNew York Times best-seller.[37]

Personal life

Shetty lives inLos Angeleswith his wife, Radhi Devlukia Shetty.[26]He is in the ownership group ofAngel Cityof theNational Women's Soccer League.[38]

Shetty presided over the 2022 wedding ofJennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.[10][39]
