Jean Rabeis an American journalist, editor, gamer and writer of fantasy and mystery. After a career as a newspaper reporter, she was employed byTSR, Inc.for several years as head of theRole Playing Game Associationand editor of thePolyhedronmagazine. Rabe began a career as a novelist for TSR andWizards of the Coast,and over the last 30 years has produced over three dozen books and scores of short stories, at first in the genres of game-relatedfantasyandscience fictionand later as an author of mystery novels.

Rabe has become known for collaborations withAndre Nortonand a series of short story anthologies frequently co-edited withMartin H. Greenberg.Rabe admits she has ghost written a few works, and has co-written fiction and non-fiction works with such diverse writers asGene DeWeese,Stephen D. Sullivan,Don Bingle,andF. Lee Bailey.She wrote her first "Piper Blackwell mystery" novel in 2018 and has published five books in the series.
Early life
editJean Rabe was born inOttawa, Illinois,and learned to play games at an early age—checkers, chess, and euchre by the age of 7, andboard wargamesin high school.[2]In 1974 she enrolled in journalism atNorthern Illinois University.In her junior year, while attending the inauguralWindycongames convention, she was introduced to the fantasy role-playing gameDungeons & Dragons,which had just been published byTSRearlier that year.[2]She subsequently took up the game as a hobby and social activity. She graduated from Northern Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism.[3]
Journalist
editAfter graduating from university, Rabe worked as a newspaper reporter and bureau chief for theQuincy Herald-WhiginQuincy, Illinois.Rabe joined theEvansville Courier & PressinEvansville, Indianain late 1983, covering critical news subjects like labor relations,[4][5]prison conditions,[6]and groundwater contamination,[7][8][9]but frequently writing stories which highlighted her love of animals.[10][11][12][13]Before Christmas 1985, reporter Rabe was dispatched toFort Campbell,Kentuckyto cover PresidentReagan's visit consoling family members after atragic crashatGander, Newfoundlandtook the lives of 256 servicemen and crew.[14][15][16]Although others got the front page bylines, theCourier & Presscredited Rabe with essential journalism which significantly affected the coverage.[17][18][19]Rabe later worked as astringerfor theRockford Register Star.[1]
Gamer
editTSRhired Rabe in 1987 to coordinate theRPGANetwork.[20][21][22]She also used her writing skills to create magazine articles and novels. In addition, Rabe wrote and editedDungeons & DragonsandGamma Worldadventure modules.
Rabe became the editor of aBattleTechmagazine,MechForce Quarterly,in 1995.[1]ForDragonlance,TSR had Rabe write the next major event forKrynnafterDragons of Summer Flame,which came to be theDragons of a New Agetrilogy, beginning withThe Dawning of a New Age(1996).[23]
WhenWizards of the Coastpurchased TSR, they published the rest of Rabe'sDragons of a New Agetrilogy before bringing backMargaret WeisandTracy Hickmanas the main authors of Dragonlance.[23]HerDragons of a New Agetrilogy consisted ofDawning of a New Age,Day of the Tempest,andEve of the Maelstrom.[1]Her other Dragonlance work includesMaquesta Kar-Thon,co-authored with Tina Daniell, andThe Silver Star.Her other work for TSR includesRed Magic,Secret of the Djinn,andNight of the Tiger.[1]Rabe also created content forImperium Games.[24]: 263 Rabe worked with Janet Pack onThe Forces of Dagnarusfor theSovereign Stonerole-playing game.[1]
She has also written more than four dozen short stories, including stories set in theDragonlance,Forgotten Realms,andStar Warssettings. Three of herStar Warsshort stories— "The Breath of Gelgelar", "Day of the Sepulchral Night", and "The Farrimmer Cafe" —have been published in theStar Wars Adventure Journals.[1][25]She has written science fiction stories forMartin H. Greenberg's office inGreen Bay, Wisconsin,[1]and coedited a number of all-original anthologies with Greenberg forDAW Books.

editRabe has also written articles forOn The Lake,a local magazine for tourists.[1]
In 2005, Rabe served as a juror for theAndre Norton Awardfor young adult fiction, which was established that year.[26]
Rabe was the business manager and later the editor of the bimonthlySFWA Bulletin,published by theScience Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.[27]In June 2013, Rabe resigned the post in the course of a controversy about allegedsexisminSFWA Bulletinarticles written by, among others,Mike ResnickandBarry N. Malzberg.[28]

editDragonlance: Death Marchwas nominated for the 2009 Special Gaming Scribe Award—awarded by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers—for "Best Original gaming-related tie-in novel of 2009.[29]
