He began his career by appearing inindependent filmssuch asDahmer(2002) andNeo Ned(2005), then supporting roles in bigger films, such asS.W.A.T.(2003) and28 Weeks Later(2007). Early life

Renner was born inModesto, California,to mother Valerie Cearley (néeTague) and father Lee Renner, who managed McHenry Bowl, a Modesto bowling alley, in the 1980s.[3][4][5]His parents married as teenagers and divorced when he was ten.[6][7][8]He is the oldest of seven siblings, the youngest of whom was born in 2011.[9]He is of Irish and German descent.[10]

Renner graduated fromFred C. Beyer High Schoolin Modesto in 1989.[4]He attendedModesto Junior College,where he studied computer science and criminology, before he took a drama class as an elective and decided to pursue acting.[4][11]

Career

1995–2001: Early work

Renner made his film debut as an underachieving student in the 1995 comedyNational Lampoon's Senior Trip.[12]Although the film was critically panned, he went on to guest star on two television shows,Deadly GamesandStrange Luck,and had a minor role in the television filmA Friend's Betrayalas the friend of Paul Hewitt (Brian Austin Green). Over the next few years, Renner had guest roles inZoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane(1999),The Net(1999),The Time of Your Life(1999), andAngel(2000).[13]In 2001 Renner had a small role in an episode ofCSI: Crime Scene Investigation.Renner worked as a makeup artist during this period to help make ends meet.[14]

2002–2008: Early success

In 2002, Renner starred inDahmeras the eponymous serial killerJeffrey Dahmer.He found the non-fiction role a challenge to cope with after he had finished shooting the film, knowing that Dahmer had murdered seventeen victims.[15]His performance was well received, and he gained a nomination for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Lead Male.He also appeared inPink's 2003 music video for her song "Trouble"as a Bad Boy Sheriff.[16]Renner went on to appear inS.W.A.T.[17]as the former police partner ofColin Farrell's character in 2003 andThe Heart Is Deceitful Above All Thingsin 2004.[18]

In 2005, Renner starred withJulia StilesandForest WhitakerinA Little Trip to Heaven,[19]with roles inNorth Countryand12 and Holding.He next starred as a neo-Nazi skinhead who is admitted into a psychiatric hospital inNeo NedwithGabrielle Union.The film won awards at multiple film festivals, including thePalm Beach International Film FestivalAward for Best Actor. After shootingNeo Ned,Renner was offered the lead in the Las Vegas indieNorthtown,but the project never happened.[20]Renner also had a small (though uncredited) role in skateboard filmLords of Dogtownas the manager ofEmile Hirsch's character. In 2006, he starred withGinnifer GoodwininLove Comes to the Executioner.

In 2007 Renner had supporting roles in the critically acclaimedThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert FordasWood Hite,the cousin of outlawJesse James(portrayed byBrad Pitt), and as Sergeant Doyle in28 Weeks Later.[21]He starred withMinnie DriverinTakeand guest-starred as a patient (a reckless rock musician) in an episode ofHouse.Renner had a role in the pilot ofThe Oaks,[22]but the series was not picked up.[23]

2009–2013: Critical and commercial breakout

After starring withDallas Robertsin the comedy-dramaIngeniousand starring in the short-lived television seriesThe Unusuals,Renner portrayed U.S. Army bomb disposal expert Sergeant First Class William James in the 2009 Iraq war thrillerThe Hurt Locker(directed byKathryn Bigelow). The role earned him several awards in the Best Actor category and his first Academy Award nomination forBest Actor[24]as well aScreen Actors Guild Awardnomination.[25]

In 2010, Renner's performance inBen Affleck'sThe TownalongsideJon Hamm,Blake Lively,Slaineand Michael Yebba received extremely positive reviews and earned Renner's second Academy Award nomination, forBest Supporting Actor.[26]He also gained his first Golden Globe nomination forBest Supporting Actor[27]and his second Screen Actors Guild nomination.[28]The Hollywood Reporternamed Renner as one of the young male actors who are "pushing – or being pushed" into taking over Hollywood as the new "A-List".[29]

In 2011, Renner starred in the fourthMission: Impossibleinstallment,Ghost Protocolas William Brandt, and had an uncredited cameo appearance asHawkeyeinThorfor familiarity with his character forThe Avengers,which was released in May 2012.[30][31][32]The same year, he also starred in the fourth film in theBournefranchise,The Bourne Legacy,which was written and directed byTony Gilroy.[33]Renner played a new lead character, Aaron Cross, in place ofJason Bourne,who was played byMatt Damonin the first three films. Renner has expressed interest in doing aBournefilm with Damon in the future, stating that "[it] would be kick-ass. I love Matt".[34]

Renner starred in the action horror filmHansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters(released in January 2013), in which he andGemma Artertonplayed Hansel and Gretel, respectively. The 3-D film was set 15 years afterHansel and Gretelkilled the witch who kidnapped them.[35]Renner was also featured in the ensemble cast ofDavid O. Russell's dramedyAmerican Hustle,based on the controversialFBIABSCAMoperation of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The film, which was released in December 2013, also starredChristian Bale,Bradley Cooper,Amy AdamsandJennifer Lawrencein principal roles. The film earned much critical acclaim, including theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Pictureand a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Picture.

2014–present: Continued work

In October 2014, Renner starred as journalistGary Webbin theFocus FeaturesfilmKill the Messenger,based on Webb's bookDark Alliance.Renner also co-produced the film. In December 2014,CrackleairedThe Throwaways,a film for which Renner served as executive producer.[36]

In 2015, Renner reprised his role as Hawkeye inAvengers: Age of Ultron,the sequel toThe Avengers.[37]He returned to theMission: Impossiblefranchise inMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,released in July 2015.[38]In 2016, Renner played Hawkeye again in the summer blockbuster filmCaptain America: Civil War,and starred with Amy Adams in the sci-fi filmArrival.[39]Renner is a producer of the 2016 filmThe FounderstarringMichael KeatonasRay Kroc.[40]In 2015, his production company The Combine signed a deal with PalmStar Media.[41]

In 2016, Renner was an executive producer onHistory's historical dramaKnightfall.[42]In 2017, while working on the filmTag(2018), Renner fractured his right elbow and his left wrist.[43]He also appeared in the filmWind Riverwith his MCU co-starElizabeth Olsen.[44]

Renner filmed scenes as Hawkeye forAvengers: Infinity War(2018)[45]but ultimately did not appear in the film, with his scenes instead moved toAvengers: Endgame(2019), where he had a starring role.[46][47]Because of scheduling conflicts resulting from the filming ofInfinity WarandEndgame,he was unable to reprise his role as William Brandt inMission: Impossible – Fallout(2018).[48]In July 2018, Renner was announced to playTwitch WilliamsinTodd McFarlane'sKing Spawn.[49]He reprised his role as Hawkeye inthe eponymous 2021 Disney+ series.In the same year, Renner starred in theParamount+seriesMayor of Kingstown,which was renewed for a second season premiered in 2023.[50][needs update]

Renner is also a singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, and drummer. Early in his acting career, he performed in the Sons of Ben. He has performed songs on several film soundtracks: "I Drink Alone" forNorth Country,"American Pie" forLove Comes to the Executioner,and "Good Ole Rebel" forThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.He also appeared in music videos for "Trouble" byP!nkand "Scenes on Sunset" by Brother Sal. He was featured inSam Feldt's 2018 single, "Heaven (Don't Have a Name)".[53]

He released his firstextended play,The Medicine,in March 2020.[54]A new album titledWaitis set for release on January 1, 2024, the one-year anniversary of his accident.[55]

Mobile app

Renner released amobile appcalledJeremy Renner(Android) andJeremy Renner Official(iOS) in March 2017. The app was created byEscapex,a company that specializes in monetized apps for celebrities.[56]Fast Companywrote extensively about Renner's app in April 2019, calling it "a surprising new kind of social media".[57]

The community developed to include memes, selfies, and a "Happy Rennsday" event on Wednesdays. As early as October 2017, there were claims of censorship, bullying, and "contest-rigging". In September 2019, comedian Stefan Heck publicized his discovery of the fact that replies through the app appear as if they were sent by Renner himself inpush notifications.After several users abused this feature, Renner asked Escapex to shut down the app.[58][59][60][61][62]

Personal life

Renner married Canadian model Sonni Pacheco on January 13, 2014.[63]Renner and Pacheco have a daughter.[64]On December 30, 2014, Pacheco filed for divorce from Renner, citing irreconcilable differences.[65]They share custody of their daughter.[66]Pacheco and their daughter madecameo appearancesin the filmAmerican Hustle.

Since 2014, Renner has lived inWashoe County, Nevada,[67][68][69]nearNevada State Route 431and theMount Rose ski resort.[70]He has a house-renovating business with his best friend and fellow actor, Kristoffer Winters.[12][71]He has studiedArnisandMuay Thaimartial arts as preparation for his roles in theMission: ImpossibleandAvengersfranchises.[3][7]

Renner is a fan of theSan Francisco 49ers.[72]He narrated theNFL Networkdocumentary seriesThe Timelineepisode "A Tale of Two Cities", which chronicles the history of the team'srivalrywith theDallas Cowboys,with Renner narrating from the San Francisco perspective and the Dallas perspective narrated by actorSam Elliott.[73]Renner also narrated the introductory video for the grand opening ofLevi's Stadium.[74]

On January 1, 2023, Renner was hospitalized after suffering blunt chest trauma and 38 broken bones. He saved his nephew from being run over by his snowplow, but was hit himself,[75][76][77][78]by asnowcatweighing 14,330 pounds (6,500 kg).[79]Renner wasflown by helicopter[80]toRenown Regional Medical Center(the region's onlytrauma center).[81]Renner underwent surgery and remained in theintensive care unitin critical condition.[77]By January 17, Renner was released from the hospital and had returned home to continue his recovery.[82]Approximately three months after the accident, Renner was beginning to be able to walk with a cane. Doctors said that Renner's survival was probably aided by his health and fitness.[83]
