Joel Hamling(born 9 April 1993) is a professionalAustralian rules footballerplaying for theSydney Swansin theAustralian Football League(AFL). Hamling previously played for theWestern Bulldogsfrom 2015 to 2016 andFremantlebetween 2017 and 2023, after initially being drafted toGeelongin the2011 AFL draft.

Early life and junior football
editOfYorta Yortaindigenous descent,[1]Hamling was born inDenmark, Western Australia,but was brought up inBroome.[2][3]Hamling played colts (Under 18) forClaremontin theWAFL.
AFL
editHamling was recruited by theGeelong Football Clubwith pick 32 in the2011 national draft.After three years with Geelong without playing a senior match, he joined theWestern Bulldogsas a delisted free agent at the end of the 2014 season.[4]Hamling made his debut in round 9,2015,againstGreater Western SydneyatEtihad Stadium.[5]Hamling was a part of the Western Bulldogs premiership team in 2016. Following the2016 AFL seasonhe returned home toWestern Australiawhen he was traded to theFremantle Football Club.[6]
Hamling missed the entire 2020 season due to an ankle injury. Hamling only played one game during the 2021 season after he re-injured the same ankle in round one against Melbourne and had to undergo ankle surgery in July 2021. Hamling made his return in round 2 of the2022 AFL seasonduring Fremantle's clash againstSt Kilda.[7]
Following the2023 AFL season,Hamling signed with the Sydney Swans as an unrestricted free agent.[8]
