John GillettMBE(1925–1995)[a]was a British film critic and researcher whose career at theBritish Film Institutespanned over 44 years.[1]He was also a programmer for theNational Film Theatreon the works ofBuster Keaton,earlyRussian cinemaandJapanese cinema,to name a few.[1][2]He wrote film reviews forThe Monthly Film Bulletin.[3]WithIan Christie,he editedFuturism/Formalism/FEKS: 'Eccentrism' and Soviet Cinema 1918-1936.[4]He was also an editor ofYasujiro Ozu: A Critical Anthology,with David Wilson.[5]

He served on the international jury at the successful15th Berlin International Film Festivalin 1965[6]and as jury member in July 1994 at the 29thKarlovy Vary International Film Festival.[7]

In June 1994 he received anMBEfor services to the British Film Institute. That same year he was awarded the JapaneseOrder of the Sacred Treasure,Gold Rays with Rosette as recognition of his contribution to the appreciation of Japanese film and filmmakers. The certificate is just one of the items which form part of theJohn Gillettcollection held by the British Film Institute.[8]

A film tribute of John Gillett's life was made in 1996 by the British Film Institute, featuring Leslie Hardcastle,David RobinsonandSheila Whitaker.[9]
