Kata guruma(Vai xe)is one of the traditional fortythrowsofjudoas developed byKano Jigoro.Kata guruma belongs to thethird groupof the traditional throwing list in theGokyo no wazaof theKodokanJudo.[1]It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo.[2]Because the technique is not a sweep nor a trip and requirestorito pullukeinto a carry, it is categorized as a hand throwingtechnique(tewaza).[3]

editInThe Essence of Judo,Kyuzo Mifunedemonstrates three variations of kata guruma. In the second variation, Mifune steps behinduke,and in the third he steps behindukeand grabsuke's left leg instead. In all three variations,ukeis lifted up totori's shoulder behindtori's head, and then dropped forward (as in the above clip). The drop kata guruma is a variant of kata guruma.[4]Other, minor variations were invented by Mifune's understudyKyutaro Kanda.[5]
Ronda Rouseyuses a variation in WWE where she drops opponents backwards like aSamoan drop.[6]Because the most common versions of kata guruma involve a grip below the belt/touching the legs, these variations are now illegal under the current International Judo Federation rules (as of 2019).
