The municipality is situated between the riverInnersteand its tributary the riverGrane,on the northern edge of theHarzmountain range and theHarz National Park,located about 8 km (5.0 mi) northwest ofGoslar.

History

The place once calledLangenizzedeveloped in the 10th century out of a hill fort at theKahnsteinmountain, erected by theOttonian dynasty.Langelsheim was the site of historicironworks,first documented in the 13th century, where ore from theMines of Rammelsbergwas smelted. The former municipalitiesHahausen,Lutter am BarenbergeandWallmodenare part of Langelsheim since 1 November 2021.[5]
