Lois Tiltonis an Americanscience fiction,fantasy,alternate history, andhorrorwriter who has won theSidewise Awardand been a finalist for theNebula Award.She has also written a number of innovativevampire stories.[1][2]

Writing career

Between 1985 and 2009, Tilton published more than 70 short stories in a number of publications including magazines such asAsimov's Science Fiction,Dragon,Fantasy and Science Fiction,Aboriginal Science Fiction,Amazing Stories,Weird Tales,Realms of Fantasy,Paradox,andInterzone.[3][4]Her stories also appeared in anthologies such asThe Best of Weird Tales,[5]The Year's Best Science Fiction,Women of Darkness,Borderlands II,[4]Adventures in the Twilight Zone,[6]andDead End: City Limits: An Anthology of Urban Fear[7]along with multiple editions of theSword and Sorceress series.[8]

Tilton has also written media-related novels in theBabylon 5[9]andDeep Space Nineuniverses[10]with her novelBetrayalspending 4 weeks on theUSA Todaybest sellers list.[11]In addition, Tilton is known as an author of "innovative contemporary vampire fiction."[1]Her first novel,Vampire Winter,was released in 1990 and dealt with a vampire trying to survive in a world where humans have destroyed the planet in a nuclear war.[12][13]Her novelDarkspawn,about a vampire prince who awakens to find his world overrun with barbarians, mixes a vampire tale with thesword and sorcery genre[14]and was called "an innovative tale of horror" by Grahan Wilson and Paul Di Filippo inRealms of Fantasy.[2]

Tilton's novelWritten in Venomretells the story ofLokiand his betrayal ofOdin,withDon D'AmmassainScience Fiction Chroniclecalling the novel "a nicely untraditional variant" of Norse mythology.[15]Written in Venomwould be named to the preliminary ballot for the 2002Nebula Award for Best Novel.[16]

Tilton was a short fiction reviewer for the websiteLocus Onlinefrom March 2010 till January 2016. Previously, she reviewed short fiction forThe Internet Review of Science Fiction.

Awards

Tilton won theSidewise Award for Alternate Historyin the short form category for her story "Pericles the Tyrant" in 2006.[17]In 2005, her story, "The Gladiator's War" was a finalist for theNebula Award for Best Novelette,theTheodore Sturgeon Awardand the Sidewise Award.
