Makuhari Messe(Mạc trương メッセ)is aconvention centerinChiba City,Chiba Prefecture,Japan, located just outside ofTokyo.Designed byFumihiko Maki,it is accessible byTokyo's commuter rail system.Makuhariis the name of the area, andMesseis aGerman languageword meaning "trade fair".

The convention center opened on 9 October 1989. It hosts manyhigh-technologyevents.
Makuhari Messe is close toTokyo Disney ResortinUrayasu,and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible fromKaihimmakuhari stationon theKeiyō LineofEast Japan Railway Company(JR East). The center is host to many annual events and trade shows, including:Tokyo Auto Salon(modified car show, in January), the biennialTokyo Motor Show(in October), the annualTokyo Game Show(video gamehardware and software exhibition, in September), the annualJump Festa(manga,anime,and video game exposition, in December), the biannualWonder Festival(toys,scale figures,andgarage kitsexposition, in February and July) and some stages of theSummer Sonicmusic festival.The venue was also host to severalNintendo Space Worldevents for many years.
It was the venue for several sports during theTokyo 2020 OlympicandParalympic Games.
Notable events
editOn 14–15 June 1997, the first officialPokémon Trading Card Gametournament was held here.[1]
On 31 July 1999, rock bandGlayheldGlay Expo '99 Survivalin the venue's parking lot. The concert garnered a total audience of 200,000 people, making it thelargest-ticketed concert ever held by a single actat the time, as certified by theGuinness World Records.[2][3]
From 19 to 21 July 2008,Lucasfilmpresented aStar WarsCelebrationJapan event at the venue to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Japanese premiere ofStar Wars.[4]
The "Jack in the Box 2009 Summer" convention was held here on 15 August 2009, where numerous well-known acts performed,[5]including the reunion performance of influential metal bandDead End.[6]
It was scheduled to host theAnime Contents Expo,hosted by the Comic-10 Shakai in March 2011 to counter theTokyo International Anime Fairas part of theirboycottof theTokyo Metropolitan Governmentunder GovernorShintarō Ishihara,but both events were cancelled after the2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.[7]The first Anime Contents Expo was held on 31 March and 1 April 2012, and was visited by 42,000 people.[8]
Theheavy metalannual festival tourOzzfesttook place here on 11–12 May 2013. This was the festival's first appearance in Japan.[9][10][11][12]
Kawaii metalbandBabymetalhas played a number of concerts here including theLegend 1997show on 21 December 2013 for singerSu-metal's16th birthday, which was recorded for live DVD. On their 2015 World Tour, they would again play here and release the performance on live DVD as part of theTrilogy: Metal Resistance Episode III – Apocalypselimited edition DVD set available only to members of "The One".[13][14]
Ariana Grandeplayed three shows at the arena for her 2017Dangerous Woman Tourperforming to over 52,000 people.[15]
Makuhari Messe became the venue for four sports during theTokyo 2020 Olympics.The sports of fencing, taekwondo, karate, and wrestling were originally to be staged atTokyo Big Sight.This move was a part of cost-cutting measures implemented by the organisers.[16][17]Karatehas since been moved to theNippon Budokan.Assigned halls for the Games are:[18]
- Hall A: For the Olympic Games,taekwondoandwrestling;then for the Paralympic Games,sitting volleyball;
- Hall B: For the Olympic Games,fencing;then for the Paralympic Games,taekwondoandwheelchair fencing;
- Hall C: For the Paralympic Games,goalball.
