Marc Warren(born 20 March 1967)[1]is an English actor, known for his British television roles. His roles have includedAlbert BlitheinBand of Brothers(2001),Danny BlueinHustle(2003-2007), Dougie Raymond inThe Vice,Dominic Foy inState of Play,Rick inMad Dogs(2011-2013), theComte de RochefortinThe Musketeers(2015), the Gentleman inJonathan Strange & Mr Norrell(2015), and Piet Van Der Valk in TV seriesVan Der Valk(2020). Early life and education

Marc Warren and his family moved fromNorthamptonshiretoFarnborough, Hampshire,in 1979. He attendedCove Senior Schoolfor two years before moving back toNorthamptonin 1982.[2]

He studied drama at theEast 15 Acting SchoolinLoughton,Essex, but left without graduating after being asked to play "the colour orange".[3]

Theatre

Warren made his professional debut in May 1986, when he appeared atThe Northampton Theatre RoyalinStags and Hens.[3]He was a member of theNational Youth Theatre,[3]and he played Billy Casper inKesat theBirmingham Repstudio, and UK tour, directed by John Herriman for the Snap Theatre Company.[4]In 1991, he played the role of 'Lot' in a production ofKingdom of Earthat theRedgrave TheatreinFarnham,Hampshire.[5]In November 1991, he played Jem, inTo Kill a Mockingbird,at theYork Theatre Royal.[5]

He starred in a revival ofMartin McDonagh'sThe Pillowmanat Leicester'sCurve Theatrein 2009, playing Katurian, for which he was nominated for aTMA awardfor 'Best performance in a Play'.[6]The same year, he starred as Ray Say in a West End revival ofThe Rise and Fall of Little VoicealongsideDiana VickersandLesley Sharp.[4]To promote the play, he wrote a series of articles forThe Guardian,titled "Marc Warren's Little Voice diary",[7]and appeared onThe One Show.[8]

Warren returned to the theatre in September 2011, playing the charismatic rebel protagonist inEmma Reeves' new adaptation ofDonn Pearce's novelCool Hand Luke,at London'sAldwych Theatre.[9]

Warren's first major film breakthrough was the 1992BBCfilmAn Ungentlemanly Act,in which he playedTony Hunt,alongsideIan Richardson.[4]He appeared inGrange Hillin the early 1990s as schoolboy Thomas Rankin.[10]He starred in the 1995 British drama filmBoston Kickout,[4]and playedimmortalMorgan D'Estaing in the season fourHighlanderepisode "Double Jeopardy"in 1996.[11]He played Police Constable Dougie Raymond in the British television seriesThe Vice,[11]andAlbert BlitheinHBO's 2001 miniseriesBand of Brothers.[11]

In 2000, he was presented with aRoyal Television Societyaward for his role asMonksin theITV production ofOliver Twist.He appeared in the 2001 television dramaMen Onlyas Mac, the husband of Katie (Esther Hall). In 2002, he played Dr. Ivo Steadman inNo Night Is Too Long,a British film adapted from thenovel of the same name.He played key supporting character Dominic Foy in the 2003 BBC serialState of Play.Between 2004 and 2007, he played Danny Blue (a main character) in the BBC TV seriesHustle(series 1 to 4).[4]

In June 2006, Warren played the character Elton Pope in theDoctor Whoepisode "Love & Monsters".[4]In December of that year, he appeared as the crazed assassinMr. TeatimeinSky One's adaptation ofHogfatherbyTerry Pratchett.The same month, he playedCount Draculain a new adaptation ofBram Stoker's classic novel, produced byITV ProductionsforBBC Wales.The TV film, which aired in December, received viewing figures of 5.23 million.[12]

In February 2007, he appeared as casino-operating villain Tony Crane in the second series of BBC dramaLife on Mars.[13]In December of the same year, he played Mr. John Simpson in the BBC production ofBallet ShoeswithEmilia FoxandEmma Watson.In January 2008, he starred in the Messiah seriesMessiah V: The Rapture,taking over the main role fromKen Stott.He played the Repairman, a member of The Fraternity, in the 2008 filmWanted.[4]

He won 'Overall Best Actor' at the 2009 Rome Fiction Festival, for his performance as Philip Crowley inBurn Up(2008).[14]

In May 2010, Warren playedSteve StrangeinWorried About the Boy,a BBC production about the life ofBoy George.[15]The following year, he initiated and starred in a new Sky One production,Mad Dogs(alongsideMax Beesley,Philip GlenisterandJohn Simm), which eventually ran to fourteen episodes over four series.[16]

He reprised his role of Danny Blue for the final episode ofHustle(series 8) in 2012. That same year, he joined the cast of the American dramaThe Good Wifein the recurring role of Kalinda Sharma's estranged husband.[17][2]He playedRochefortin the BBC dramaThe Musketeers,and appeared as The Gentleman in the BBC'sJonathan Strange & Mr NorrellalongsideEddie Marsan.[3][2]

From 2020, Warren starred as the title character in theITVreboot of the '70s detective seriesVan der Valk.[3]The fourth series went to air in August 2024.[18][19]

In 2009, Warren voiced "Orange" in a UK advertising campaign forZurich Insurance GroupalongsideAlexander Armstrong.[20]

In 2011, Warren fronted an ad campaign forVirgin Media'sTiVoset-top boxes.[21]

Personal life

Warren is interested in magic,sleight of hand,andmentalism,and has spent some time studying the art ofmind reading.[22]In his spare time, he likes to meditate, and play the guitar.[3]From 2007 to 2009, Warren was in a relationship withAbi Titmuss.[23][24]
