Valerio was born inCampbell, Ohioand graduated from theHawken SchoolinGates Mills, Ohio.Afterward, she attended theUniversity of VirginiainCharlottesville, Virginia,where she swam for theVirginia Cavaliers swimming and divingteam.

At the1996 Summer Olympicsin Atlanta, Georgia, Valerio earned a gold medal by swimming for the winning U.S. team in the preliminary heats of thewomen's 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
