Life and career
editSmith was born inNewcastle upon Tyne.[1]He played local football for St Peter's Albion before beginning a tour of theFootball League.After single seasons withMerthyr Town,Hull City,Hartlepools Unitedand Merthyr Town again, before joiningCardiff Cityin 1929, where he spent three seasons disrupted by injury. In 1929, he signed forBrighton & Hove Albion,where he established himself as a first-team regular, averaging 40 league matches a season over an eight-year spell. After a season withCrystal Palacewithout a league appearance,[1][2]he moved intonon-league footballwithGloucester City,where he acted asplayer-coach.[3]Smith died inBrightonin 1978 at the age of 77.[1]
