Kevin Pouya(born December 20, 1994),[1]knownmononymouslyasPouya,is an American rapper fromMiami, Florida.[2]Considered as a pioneer of the earlyunderground rapscene that began onSoundcloudin 2012,[3]along with discovering the well known hip-hop duoSuicideboysin their early career,[4]Pouya has developed a long-lastingcore fanbaseas anindependent artist.

Early life

As a teenager, Pouya and his best friend Nicholas Voutsinas (known professionally as "Fat Nick") had aYouTubecomedy channel calledNICK AND POUYA SHOW.[5]While mostly beingcomedy sketches,the videos also served as mini vlogs for the friends. Travelling around the local neighborhoods inMiami,they would often feature other friends in the videos, including future rapperDenzel Curryand the groupRaider Klan.[6]

Pouya dropped out ofhigh schoolin his sophomore year.[7]He worked cleaning toilets at a restaurant for a year before finding success in music.[8]

Career

Pouya started rapping seriously around 2011,[9]and after debuting a freestyle with local Florida rapper Nell titledShotz From The Double Glock,[10][8]began releasing music frequently. Again staying close with childhood friendFat Nick,the two formed theBuffet Boys,a group that later became their record label. He gained notoriety after he released the song "Get Buck" in 2013, which as of June 2022 has over 13 million video views.[11]On November 20, 2013, Pouya released a collaboration EP withThe Cool Kids'Sir Michael RockstitledGookin'.The two connected after Rocks had moved to Miami.[12]

His fifth solo mixtapeStunna,would be released on March 5, 2014.Elevator Magazinewould describe the mixtape asBone Thugs-N-Harmonyinfluenced, saying "he does a great job of molding their style into his own version with a twist of his own style thrown in there."[13]His next mixtape would be released on March 25, 2015, entitledSouth Side Slugs.The mixtape would contain guest appearances fromSir Michael Rocks,Denzel Curry,SDotBraddy,Fat Nick,and new Buffet Boys member Germ.[14]Pouya collaborated withSuicideboyson an EP titled$outh $ide $uicide,that was released on September 1, 2015.[15]

In 2016, he released his debut studio albumUnderground Underdogunder the Buffet Boys label.[16][17]The album peaked at #156 on theBillboard 200.[18]In 2017, he was a featured artist in the song "On Her Mind" byprogressive metalcorebandVolumeson their albumDifferent Animals.[19][20]That same year, he released a collaboration mixtape withFat NicktitledDrop Out of School.[21]In 2018 he released his second studio album, titledFive Five.[7][22][23]On June 30, 2019, Pouya released his third studio album titled,The South Got Something to Say.The album included guest appearances fromCity Morgue,Juicy JandGhostemane.[24]

In December 2020, Pouya collaborated withFat Nickto releaseDrop Out of School 2.[25]Pouya's fourth studio albumBlood Was Never Thick As Waterwas released on October 22, 2021. The title comes from a lyric in the closing song to the album, and features rapperDenzel Curryand singer Lu.[26]In February 2022, he released the extended playdirt/hurt/pain/.[27]It would be the last project by Pouya to be released underBuffet Boys.

In March 2022, Pouya along with otherBuffet Boysmembers, announced that the label would be disbanding indefinitely.[28]Not long after, they announced their new labelAll But 6 Records.
