Rachel Zegler(/ˈzɛɡlər/;[1]born May 3, 2001[2]) is an American actress and singer. She came to prominence with her film debut playing María inSteven Spielberg's musical adaptationWest Side Story(2021), for which she won theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Early life

Rachel Zegler was born inHackensack, New Jersey,on May 3, 2001, to Gina and Craig Zegler.[3][4][5]Her paternal grandparents are Chester Joseph Zegler and Maureen Teresa (née Cahill).[6]She was named after the fictional characterRachel Greenfrom the TV seriesFriends.[7]She has an older sister named Jacklyn.[8]Her mother is ofColombiandescent. Her maternal grandmother immigrated fromBarranquilla, Colombia,to the United States in the 1960s.[9]Her father is ofPolishdescent.[10][11]Due to her ethnicity, Zegler facedracial discriminationas a child.[3] At the age of four, Zegler saw her firstBroadwayshow,Beauty and the Beast.Since then, she has been a huge fan of the theater.[3]

Zegler's first acting role came when she was 12, when she played Shprintze in a play ofFiddler on the Roof.It was then that she decided she wanted to be an actress, so she started taking voice and acting lessons.[3]

Career

Zegler began her career starring in several musicals while in high school, playingBelleinBeauty and the Beast(2016),ArielinThe Little Mermaid(2017),[12]Dorothy Brock in42nd Street(2018), andPrincess FionainShrek The Musical(2019).[13][14]For all four performances, she received Metro Award nominations in the Actress in a Leading Role category.[13]Her other roles have includes Serena inLegally Blonde,CosetteinLes Misérables,and Millie inThoroughly Modern Millie.[15]HerYouTubechannel has been active since July 2015[16]which garnered media coverage and positive critical reception.[17][18]As of 2022, her video of herself singing "Shallow",fromA Star Is Born,had garnered over 12.2 million views on Twitter.[19][10]

Zegler in 2019

In January 2018, directorSteven Spielbergposted an open casting call viaTwitterfor a new film adaptation ofWest Side Story.[20]Zegler, then 16 years old, responded to the casting call tweets with videos of herself singing "Tonight"and"I Feel Pretty";she had performed the role at theBergen Performing Arts Centerin 2017.[21][10]She was selected from over 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria, marking her film debut.[22]The film was released in December 2021,[23]and earned acclaim from critics and audiences.[24][25][26]For her performance, she received aCritics' Choice Movie Awardnomination forBest Young Performerand won theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy,[27][28]making her the first actress of Colombian descent to win in that category as well as the youngest winner in that category at 20 years old.[29]

In October 2023, Zegler announced her exit fromPaddington in Peru,attributing her departure to the SAG strike. The third installment ofPaddingtonwas filmed with actress Carla Tous replacing her role as Gina Cabot.[35][36]She made an appearance inKyle Mooney's directorial debut filmY2K,produced byA24,[37]which debuted at theSouth by SouthwestFestival in 2024 and was released on December 6 that year to mixed reception.[38]

Zegler made herBroadwaydebut playing Juliet in a musical adaptation ofWilliam Shakespeare'sRomeo & Juliet,directed bySam Goldwith music byJack Antonoff.[39]Performances are set to run from September 26, 2024 to February 16, 2025.[40]She will voice the lead character in the animated musical filmSpellbound,directed byVicky Jenson,which is scheduled to premiere onNetflix.[41][42]She will also play thetitular characterinSnow White,a live-action adaptation the1937 animated Disney film,scheduled to be released in 2025.[43][44]

She was initially not invited to attend the94th Academy Awardsceremony of 2022 to support her colleagues involved inWest Side Story,which received seven nominations, includingBest Picture.[49]After some controversy over the perceived snub in the media,[50]the Academy invited her to be a presenter[51]for theAcademy Award for Best Visual Effects.[52][53]

Personal life

In February 2021, Zegler and actorJosh Andrés Riveraconfirmed that they were dating. The two had met on the set ofWest Side Storyand later starred inThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakestogether.[54]

Zegler considersBarbra Streisandto be one of her primary influences.[55]In 2021, Streisand sent Zegler a copy of her albumRelease Me 2and a copy of the bookStreisand From A to Z,along with a note reading, "For R., from B.," to which Zegler responded, "There's simply no way this is real!"[56][57]

Political views

Zegler has publicly supportedPalestinein theIsraeli–Palestinian conflictsince 2021. In October 2023, she became a member ofArtists4Ceasefireand signed their letter urgingJoe Bidento facilitate aceasefireto endIsrael's bombardment of the Gaza Strip.In a January 2024Instagramstory, she urged her followers to pressure their government leaders to support a ceasefire in Gaza. In August 2024, shetweeted,"and always remember, free palestine [sic]. "[58][59]

In November 2024, Zegler criticizedDonald Trumpand his supporters, claiming there is a "deep, deep sickness" in the United States and accusing Trump of "threaten[ing] our democracy."[60]She also wrote, "May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace."[61]She later apologized for "contribut[ing] to the negative discourse."[61]
