Ramdas Madhava Pai(born 17 September 1935) is an Indianhealth administratorand the incumbent Chancellor at theManipal Academy of Higher Education,and chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group.

Pai graduated with hisMBBSfromKarnatak Universityin 1958.[1]He later graduated fromTemple Universitywith hisMaster of Health Administration.

Career

In 1961, he returned toManipalto become the administrator ofKasturba Hospital,the teaching hospital ofKasturba Medical College.After the death of his fatherT. M. A. Paiin 1979, he became the head of the group and later took over as chancellor in due courseChancellorof theManipal Academy of Higher Education[2]and the Chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group.[3]He is also thePro-ChancellorofSikkim Manipal University[4]and president ofT. A. Pai Management Institute[1]andchancellorof the Manipal Academy of General Education, Manipal.

His efforts led to MAHE getting the status of adeemed universitygranted by theUniversity Grants Commissionin 1993.[5]Manipal Education and Medical Group under his watch has led to exponential growth.[6]

He has previously served as a member of the Executive Council ofAssam University,theacademic senateofMangalore University,and theNational Assessment and Accreditation Council.

In 2000, he was nominated by theUnion MinisterofHuman Resource Developmentto a special six-member advisory committee to theDepartment of Higher Education.[7]

In 2001, Pai set up theManipal Foundationto run the university's philanthropic efforts.[8]

His sonRanjan Paiis an educationist and healthcare baron, who controls the Manipal Group.[9]

Pai’s contributions to education have been recognised nationally and internationally. He has received a number of awards and honours in recognition of his contribution to education, healthcare, business and community service.

  • In 2011, he received thePadma Bhushanfrom thePresident of IndiaPratibha Patilfor his outstanding contribution in the field of education and healthcare[10]He received the "Udupi Rathna in 2005 from the Udupi Utsav Committee[11]and honoured by theGovernment of Karnatakain 2006 in celebration of the Suvarna Karnataka Year.[12]
  • 'Kanara Ratna Award' by Kanara College Society, Kumta in Feb 2008.[13]
  • He received anHonorary Doctorateby theMilwaukee School of Engineeringin 1996 andAndrews Universityin 1998 and serves as honorary Professor of International Health at theUniversity of Minnesota Medical Schoolsince 1999. The Faculty of General Dental Practitioners of theRoyal College of Surgeons of Englandbestowed him with fellowship in 2004.
  • In 1993, he accepted theDr. B. C. Roy Awardfor his community health efforts from the President of IndiaShankar Dayal Sharmain 1993.[14]and received the Phillips Medal ofOhio Universityin recognition of public service.[15]
  • He was presented theKey to the CityofLoma Linda, Californiain 1982 and 1991.
  • Intellectuals Honor – The Great Son of the Soil award by All India Conference of Intellectuals in 1997.
  • Award of Philanthropy by Bunts' Sangha, Bombay in 1992.
  • 'Konkani Prathibha' award by Konkani Bhasha Prachar Sabha, Cochin in 1994.
  • Award by World Konkani Convention in 1995.
  • Lions Millennium Award 2001 conferred by Lions District 324-D4.
  • Deccan Herald Avenues HR Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2005.
  • 'MMA-KVK Outstanding Manager Award-2005' by Mangalore Management Association in December 2005.
  • 'life time achievement award 2018' by the federation of Indian Chambers of commerce and industry (FICCI).
  • Golden Peacock Lifetime Achievement Award for the Year 2011.
  • SkillTree Education Evangelist of India-2013.
